| Hey, I’m looking at the Chuck Pressburg event September 13/14 at the Hobbs Island shooting range. Presscheck is always a great class and really good way to learn, but what I’m wondering is about the area? Where to stay, eat, travel times? Can anyone suggest any good places? |

| hobbs is way down on the south side of town, not too far from hotels along south parkway. rosies is good mexican food down there. there is a new amerigo and tom browns restaurants not far as well. course you can always drive into downtown for lots more places to eat. |

I’ve never been to Hobbs Island, as I’ve only lived here since last August, but I’ve heard good things about that place. Hobbs is roughly 25 minutes South of Huntsville Downtown, where most of the restaurants that my wife and I enjoy. I’ll provide a list below. As far as Hotel, 106 Jefferson (Hilton Property) is my number 1 as they have parking, restaurant and rooftop bar at the same location. The Marriott at Space & Rocket Center is nice, we’ve stayed there a handful of times and it has a great view of all things Space. My 3rd pick would be the Westin at Bridgestreet. But you really can’t go wrong with any Hotels in the area, and there’s a lot. If you’re wanting to stay close to Hobbs Island, I wouldn’t…not with the gear that you’re bringing. There’s a Doubletree about 20 minutes north of Hobbs, and I’m sure it’s fine but I have no experience with that location. Huntsville isn’t Chicago, but the food scene is chugging along nicely and there’s quite a few options for just about anything you would want. Hit me up when you’re in town, as I’m pretty sure I’ll be here that weekend and then we’re off again to Cincinnati. |

I'm kind of a beer and bourbon enthusiast. My wife's a non-adventurous eater. It's a well-run sports bar-type environment with pretty good food. They've got some decent bourbons too. My wife always found something to eat and not the same thing every time. Straight To Ale is a microbrewery. I like their beers but some of the items on the food menu are a bit over the top and strongly flavored. Their restaurant is in an old high school. The facility is a little beat up. Earth and Stone Pizza is in the same campus with STA. The pizza is wood-fired oven-type pizza and is pretty good. They share a building with Yellow Hammer Brewing. That side of the campus is all new. However, as much I liked the pizza and the modern indoor/outdoor seating setup, I kinda started to struggle liking Yellow Hammer's beers. Stovehouse is just to the west of the STA, E&S Pizza, and Yellow Hammer campus. My son likes Stovehouse because there's lots of different places in it. I've not been yet. Those seem to capture base-related travel business. They're near a Rosie's. An office park separates the hotels from nearby apartments. I was back in there one evening in an adjacent strip mall with small restaurants and businesses to check out a liquor store.  Seemed tame. I traveled full-time for 14 years. Spidey senses were not tripped.Anyhow. YMMV. eta ... I haven't explored downtown much yet because of a parking issue ... namely in the form of a GMC 2500 HD Duramax. We only recently got my wife's Subaru over to AL after we moved out of our house in SC in July.

But I’ve heard this area has more breweries per square mile than anywhere else. And you’re right about the crime, or lack there of. We hear about some small things here and there, but it’s mostly petty theft and domestic issue (several cops have said the same thing too). If crime does get out of hand, Redstone has a bunch of Apaches! |

Stovehouse does have variety and group seating. I personally haven't been too excited about any of the options there. I have yet to visit Hobbs Island, but a friend at work is a member, so I'll probably visit with him. He's still unsure if it's worth the cost (especially sinced they closed for Labor Day when he wanted to go shooting). |

| I'm trying to avoid a bunch of Form 5320.20 to go to Tennessee to finish and zero some SBR builds. I'm also trying to avoid running to the Skyline WMA Firing Range north of Scottboro. The Hobbs Island basic membership might be the route I go. It's only ~$100 more than I was paying at Champion Defense in central SC. |
