So my 27 y.o. son is moving to Reno for work. 3 year contract, starts Jan 1, 2026. Looking for any info on good apartment complexes to look at or, just as important, places to avoid. Cost is a factor - he’ll be making around 60k. Never been there in my life so please reply like you’re talking to a toddler. Thanks! Looking forward to visiting him there! |
I don't know what will happen, or if anything will happen. But if something does, I'd rather be the guy with a gun than the guy without one.

| Reno isn't too bad, there are some bad neighborhoods, but he would immediately know when he went to look. Being a university town, the rental market is a little extra difficult. Personally, I'd probably be trying to minimize my commute while being in an ok neighborhood. Wish him luck. Its a great place to live if you're into the outdoors. If you need someone to go look at a place (or anything else boots on the ground) feel free to drop me a PM, I'm happy to help. |
| My advice is to find something somewhat close to his work. We aren't a metropolis but our traffic level is quite a bit over whatever the road designers accounted for so a normal work commute can be a bit annoying if you are fighting it. |

Look up the areas on one of the local crime maps. Avoid 4th Street near downtown unless that area has really changed. I also think a lot of the houses just south of the University are kind of sketchy, but I haven't been in that area of Reno for a few years. |
| Thanks, all - he ended up getting a place south of the city, about 15 minutes from the airport. The station he'll be working at is right next to the airport, so shouldn't be a bad drive. |

He might want to exit the freeway a little early if he otherwise has to go through the Spaghetti Bowl (the name is well-deserved). |

Nope, he doesn’t have to go through that. Well, if anyone still watches the local news, look for the new meteorologist on KTVN in early January. |

KTNV is in Las Vegas. KOLO is the station he will be at correct? Also, Reno has a "Spaghetti Bowl" as well? |
Imagine a man when it all began
The pilot of "Enola Gay"
Flying out of the shockwave on that August day
All the powers that be, and the course of history,
Would be changed forevermore...

I'm guessing that his commute hours will be off peak, so it probably won't be an issue, but he would be wise to scout out a couple alternate routes by surface streets. I wish him luck, I haven't watched any local news in forever, but I'll check out his work for sure. I've mapped the route to work from his apartment a couple times and it normally shows surface streets as the best option, so hopefully he won't be on 580 at all. |

They've beefed up some of the outer routes and built a new road on the east side that runs from Sparks to South Reno that helped a bit but 80 and 395 both have decent backups at normal commuting times. |

| He's in and settled - lives in a complex at Steamboat Parkway & Veterans Parkway. Not sure when his first show is but he might be on tonight. If the weather starts sucking, blame the new meteorologist. |

This "him"? ![]() Attached File |
The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.
| I'm sure that was him, he is the weekend guy so all the evening shows are him. Glad you think he was good! It's weird watching a kid who was incredibly shy and introverted in high school turn into someone who's comfortable going on TV all the time. |
