Title says it. I’ll be stationed at Carlisle Barracks for about a year. Anything I need to know/should know about the area? Any good ranges in the area? Thanks! |

SG 230 is a hop skip and jump from the Barracks and USAHEC https://www.visitcumberlandvalley.com/listing/state-game-lands-%23230-%26-shooting-range/1259/ Its actually one of the better PA State ranges but, flip side watch for the DCNR Cops. They will hide in the bushes and count your shots, looking for you loading more than 3rounds in a Rifle Magazine or 6 in a Pistol and randomly inspect for your PA state range permit. That range also attracts a lot of Fudd brass rats and it gets wildly wadded up with Fudds before Deer season. I don't shoot there anymore, kind of a dual citizen between PA and WV. Since buying my own large tract of land in WV, I just shoot on my own range now You'll like it, probably be a good tour. Carlisle isn't bad, Gearhead paradise also (be aware of those weekends for traffic), plus even off season (before Spring Carlisle and Fall Carlisle), always something cool going on at Carlisle Events (Comic-con's, Toy Shows, Gun Shows, whatnot) center on K street. If you dig Eastern European food, Mersida's Market over on Hanover Street (right by housing and the BOQ) is awesome and she is great. Crazy Bosnian foods and groceries. Lot of little gems there USAHEC is also great, appreciate the way the field is laid out, walking from Modern Era Hesco set up to, WW1 trenches, VN Firebase, Revolutionary Earthworks and Blockhouses, back around to WW2 Nissan Hut base, Civil War, etc. Good museum and good collection of Armor outside. Close to Gettysburg, assume since you are going there you'll be on the staff tour, |

There are a ton of local gun clubs in the area. Off the top of my head: Carlisle, West Shore, Harrisburg, Hummelstown, Steelton, Palmyra, .. Carlisle would be closest to you, but I've only shot clays there and I don't know what other facilities they have. Mifflin Co Sportsmans is an hour away, but it has a 1000 yard range and gives free memberships to military personnel. I would avoid that State run game lands ranges. Lots of unsafe people there and sometimes straight up criminals. Someone got murdered at one a while back. |
