| I see Van Orden was one of 57 Rep. Congressmen who voted for the Orwellian "Kill Switch' BS. This is getting ridiculous. What's next - .gov is going to want to put a kill switch on the beer taps i the local saloons when they think everyone has had enough? I sent him an e-mail asking if he'd care to explain his vote - we'll see what happens. |

So much for the right to be secure in our persons, houses and effects. I thought it was illegal to drive a vehicle under the influence anyways. How much will this add to the cost of a new vehicle? There was a movement to add the cost of a proposed rule against the effect of that rule. One more reason to keep my 2005 Toyota. Van Orden was supposed to be one of the new good guys. |

I e-mailed him and just asked for his reasons for his yea vote and that it seemed to go against the principles he campaigned on. He responded pretty quickly, but the response was rather "political" at best - "Thank you for contacting my office, I appreciate hearing from you and want to assure you that I have received your message. When I ran for Congress, I promised to make constituent services my top priority. I fully intend to follow through on that promise." I'm hoping there'll be a more informative follow-up, but I won't hold my breath. I was telling my wife about this bill and she doesn't really get into politics but said "I don't think that's right at all". I'm sure she's not alone. |
Besides the obvious overbearing government arguments, this sounds awfully dangerous to me. The car is supposed to detect "impaired" driving and just turn itself off? In traffic? How does it determine "impaired" driving from distracted driving, or someone dodging potholes, or sliding on snow & ice? How does it get turned back on, or are you stranded on the side of the highway or the middle of a city intersection? Does the car need to be towed to a dealer for a "reset" or what?
