Gov. Kemp of GA vetoed a state preemption bill that passed this past session. The bill would have banned local governments from punishing motorists for being the victims of theft when their firearms are stolen from their vehicles. This is an issue in places like Savannah. Gun owners legally abide by the laws and leave their guns in their cars due to gun-free zones, then their cars are targeted by criminals, and the city punishes the gun owner instead of the criminal. Savannah that makes gun owners liable for up to a $1,000 fine and 30 days in jail for leaving a gun in an unlocked vehicle. From the article: In a statement, Kemp said he was vetoing the legislation because it would open law enforcement officers to lawsuits for enforcing the rules even though they had no say in enacting them. “I wholeheartedly support increasing the monetary penalties for local governments that attempt to impede the rights of lawful weapon carriers; however, such penalties should be targeted towards the leaders who enact such ordinances, not the officers who are tasked with enforcing them,” Kemp wrote. Beside the unenforcability aspect; it's a terrible idea to punish the victim of a theft crime because a criminal stole it and used it later in another criminal act. |

| My friends daughter was a student at SCAD and was robbed leaving the local CVS in the afternoon. The police tried really hard to encourage her to not file a police report of the robbery. He withdrew her from the school less than a week later. That is the kind policing they have. |

Before I first went to Savannah I traded IMs with an Arfcom LEO who had previously worked for Savannah PD. He told me to avoid any contact whatsoever with them. He said he left for another PD because everyone he worked with there was corrupt as shit. |
