I haven't seen it in writing but in the local news summary I thought I heard that the annual cap we now have with the increase in property taxes will be increased to 10%. If that is the case then it won't take too long for the reduction to evaporate. I hope I heard wrong or misinterpreted what they said. |

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida voters will decide in November whether to approve a major property tax relief plan backed by Gov. Ron DeSantis. State lawmakers approved the proposal Tuesday, sending a constitutional amendment to the ballot. If approved by voters, the measure would expand Florida’s homestead exemption from $50,000 to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028. The expanded exemption would not apply to school district property taxes. The proposed constitutional amendment would need at least 60% voter approval to pass. Lawmakers amended the plan before final approval after concerns were raised by local governments, firefighters and Democrats about the potential impact on local services. A House staff analysis estimated the proposal could reduce annual revenue for non-school local governments by $4.6 billion at first, eventually growing to $8.4 billion per year. The plan also lowers the cap on annual assessment increases for non-homestead properties. It would also limit property tax revenues to core government services, including public safety, infrastructure, stormwater management and education. Supporters said the proposal would provide relief to homeowners facing rising property tax bills and allow voters to decide whether local governments should operate with less revenue. Opponents warned the plan could force cities and counties to cut services or shift costs to businesses, renters and property owners who do not qualify for homestead exemptions. The measure will appear on the November ballot. (WFTV) |

Nothing has been mentioned about a sales tax increase and localities can only raise it a certain amount, so that isn't a concern (yet.) I'm pretty mixed on this, I don't think it is fiscally responsible. FL doesn't have god awful property taxes and it helps that the value cannot be raised more the 3% per year. That said, I purchased my home 11 years ago, I had portability from my previous home. I would see a drastic reduction in my taxes. My neighborhood has really grown in value 3x. Property Insurance is what the fuckers need to address, my homeowners insurance is higher than my taxes, but a good amount. House is up to modern code, 100% wind mit discount, 75' above seal level, zero wildfire risk. Is this some long term plot to get a State Income Tax? Because, fuck that. |

DeSantis has mentioned many times about a trust fund that the state will use to offset loss of revenue to rural counties with much smaller tax bases. There is no mention, so far, that the sales tax increase idea has been dropped yet. |

Hi, I'm new here. Doesn't "...after concerns were raised by local governments, ... and Democrats." give us a good indication how one should vote? Where I came from, one didn't have to know anything about anything, just had to know what the Democrats said, and do the opposite. |
| As others have mentioned: School taxes from property owners continue so local governments go lean while school boards are business as usual? That is a big no from me. The state maintaining funds to help counties that are struggling? No thank you. Homeowners Insurance continues to be a killer for a lot of people, but the state won't/can't reign that in. This will go to the voters, but I see it as the state trying to interfere in local governments to some degree. |
"Little shaken babies and drunkards seem to all agree, once the show gets started its bound to be a sight to see"

Am curious what they will use to recoup the loss of money? Higher sales tax or some other tax? I recall some states decrease property tax after certain age as they figure you have no kids and no need to pay taxes going to schools. Would be nice if you pay taxes based on the number of kids you have to cover school costs. |
TBD
| the idea is great, but the reality of the issue is that while the property tax relief idea is sound, any thought that local government will reduce spending is NOT sound. If ad valorem taxes are sliced, then fees, assessments and other work arounds will be immediately put into place. Government will NOT stand for reducing their slush funds. |

I'm blown away by the opposition to this. Sure the local and county systems will have less to work with, but I'm fairly certain they each have plenty of "programs" that can be cut to offset a portion of the loss and have zero ill affects unless you're worried about the Pride budget in St. Pete or Billionaire Welfare in Tampa/Hillsborough. The Florida CFO apparently found roughly $280 million in waste in just Tampa/Hillsborough. |

Unless it costs them money someplace else, in which they're against it. They are also for public services, and want their worn out roads fixed in their County. Also unless it costs them money, in which case, they're against it." 2. There's a group of people that seem to seethe at the very thought of any property tax, under some sort of "My castle shall never be taxed, or otherwise I'm just renting it!!!" Which is strange as the oldest tax in history is property tax - it's the people (Lords) who were paying it that forced the King of England to agree to the Magna Carta. If there's a single state in the country that doesn't have a property tax, it would be surprising to me. These people won't like anything except a total elimination of all property taxes, and fees. And they also don't want any other taxes increased either - the State is supposed to sell off unicorn rides to fund things, or something. These are not serious people. 3. Prepare yourself for what local governments will do if this passes. There's even a bureaucratic name for it - malicious compliance. Local governments won't cancel the LQBTQWERTY+++ parade, or lay off the 3rd personal assistant to the mayor. They'll lay off firemen, police, and EMS, then go "See, see, what you've made us do!" The reduced programs will be the most popular and important, while keeping what they really want. That's not a reason against the proposed amendment, just be ready for it, and understand the purpose behind it - to either defeat the amendment, or have it repealed later on. |

I think this short article pretty much explains what's going on with local municipalities screaming bloody murder over this proposal. It sure does in Baker County where my wife and I get exactly nothing for the $4600 a year we pay in property taxes. Tracks with what a local county commissioner said when pressed about the constant state of road construction in the county… said something along the lines “when the state opens these grants we must jump on it or we lose the money” Sounds like a good reason to cut their revenue… |
