Your only option is pepper spray. It requires registration with D.C. police. To register, you are supposed to buy it within D.C. and the retailer is supposed to register it at the time of sale. That's the letter of the law anyway. I'd maybe try the store "Electromax" in Georgetown if its still in business. Also, check every suitcase/gym bag you will bring for live ammunition or fired cartridge cases. Fired cases = "ammunition" in D.C. and possession of a fired case = violation of D.C.'s "unregistered ammunition" law. They just convicted a D.C. resident of possessing a muzzle-loader bullet under this law (no powder, no cap, - just the bullet). |

If you need to defend yourself here, I would recommend using the fetal position and a rape whistle.
I'm really not kidding half as much as you may think I am. If you want freedom and security then you are coming to the wrong place. If you dress nicely and don't break any laws you can probably carry a non-scary, small pocket knife most places (except .gov buildings- which is half of them). You can carry the small keychain mace, but you have to register the canister with the city first. Do not carry an ASP; they're not exactly illegal, but you will have a very poor time if you are caught carrying it. I've been examining the procedure for owning a firearm here, and although there is one, the laws and zoning regulations have been designed to keep ordinary citizens from obtaining guns. I will literally give you $20 if you can point out an "open to the public" gun store in DC- that's the new zoning laws at work, in reaction to Heller in 2008. By the way, my truck window was smashed out for the second time in less than 2 months while I was having lunch in Congress Heights last week. Windows are expensive. Be mindful of where you park. I hate DC and all of the people who live here. I deeply and sincerely regret volunteering to move here.
