I went to a meeting for church safety teams (coodination, intel sharing, etc) on Saturday morning and Flathead Co Sheriff Heino was supposed to attend. He wasn’t able to because he was on the scene of a fatality car accident. Saturday evening on my way to church we had to pull off for multiple emergency vehicles going to a single car accident on the highway. No fatality but a few injured. Rumor is that speed and/or distracted driving were the cause. Today a young mom tried to pass a dump truck on a double yellow (it’s specifically no passing but used to be a passing zone through that stretch). Fuzzy on the details but she may have clipped the dumptruck and somehow both vehicles started on fire. Her subaru was fully engulfed when the FD got there. She passed in a very likely horrible way. I saw the smoke of that one from my front yard. I know, stuff happens but geez, c’mon people. |

I stay home a lot in the summer just because I don’t want to drive amongst the hordes. It’s getting that summer time frantic vibe….gross A lot of people are in a big hurry, a lot are on their phones, and a lot are drunk/high…and garden variety dumbasses. |

The road is near impassable by anything but SxS, ATV or purpose built 4x4. One trip up it we start seeing random parts on the trail... After a fashion we find a guy sitting eating lunch in him WA plated BMW. Didn't have a care in the world. An hour later we meet a brand new, 45 day stickered chevy pickup. The rocker panels were already caved in paint tore up. I guess some people have more money than brains.

Darwin award candidate. Bikers are extra sensitive. I get it that it would be fun to cruise around on a bike, but it's not worth the risk. We see a lot of motorcycle wrecks. They are either caused by crappy riders or people who couldn't see them. The lug nut rule is a real thing. 99.99999999% of the time, the car/truck/bus wins. |

Turning south in front of Walmart on 93 in Kalispell the other day I was almost in a head-on with a road rager who crossed the double yellow to pass a Utah plated car that apparently caused his consternation by taking too long to leave the actual Walmart exit and get into the left turn lane for Old Reserve. Locked up my brakes, 7yo daughter screaming in terror, etc. My family was with me…I’m no longer a violent man but if we would have been hit under those conditions I would have had a hard time not going to jail for assault of the idiot who couldn’t control his temper well enough to not cause a head on crash. Kalispell driving is a harrowing experience in the summer anymore. I just try not to go during peak times, but sometimes it’s unavoidable. It’s really bad this year. More so than the other 4 summers I’ve been here. |
