I have a gen 1 tacoma with the notorious error code for a small evap leak.

Last time i had to go for testing the check engine light was going on and off intermittently and went on halfway through the test but passed.

Since then it’s basically always on. I have testing in july again. If i cant get it to pass what is the protocol from there? spend a few hundo trying to fix it and keep receipts and get an exemption?

It passed even with the check engine light on? That's contrary to what I've read, but I'll take your word for it.

From the link that was posted, assuming it fails, you'll need to have it fixed and retested. The repair waiver is only if you spend more than $1100 to get it fixed.

Plot twist: If you get your ~~car~~truck repaired and don't drive it regularly, it may fail inspection anyway because not all the OBD II sensors are "ready". My 2009 Honda Civic had the light come on right when it was due to be inspected. I had the repairs done, assuming it would fail, but even though the light was off it failed anyway. This happened in 2021, and since I was working from home I wasn't driving it much. Resetting the light also resets the sensors' ready status. Since I never put it through a complete "drive cycle", which includes a fair amount of highway driving, some of the sensors were inactive. Each manufacturer has a recommended series of steps to follow to complete the drive cycle. Honda's was in the owner's manual. I followed those steps and it passed inspection on the second attempt.

1st gen tacomas have a rats nest of vacuum hoses around the intake. You may have a bad evap sensor or a bad hose. You need a shop to smoke test it and check sensors.
