Hey all,

I did a DIY backpack antelope hunt for a few years in the Buffalo area.  But I drew a cow elk tag this year, along with my 2 hunting buddies.

I did elk hunting, DIY, western slope of Colorado for 10 years with my dad. (He did it for 25 years.)

I’m fairly experienced. My one buddy isn’t. He’s having a tough year with a bunch of life things. So I’m looking for an outfitter that would be willing to take on 3 people.  (Or just point me in the right direction and call it a day. I’m easy.)

We drew for unit 36.  All cow/calf.

If you know of anyone, or even just private land we can pay to play - let me know.  I’m of course, willing to pay for it. Nicer it is, more I know I’ll pay. Not my first rodeo in this world either.

DM me, @ me. Whatever works if you can help or know someone. I know this is last minute.

Thank you,

@Foxtrot08

Very few landowners on the face and not a single one needs the money, you’re not going to get access.

Very weather dependent area. If we get snow in the high country in that unit it will push them down and your best bet is The Bud Love Wildlife Refuge. Hunt the tree line at first and last light as far from the parking areas as you can to get them coming and going to nightly feed. The warmer it is the further in the National Forrest they are going to bed. They are not going to be in the refuge during the day after opening day, too much pressure.

If it stays warm… lots of places to drive in to the north from 16, where they are going to be in anyone’s guess. Look for open parks on the map. It’s a very rugged area with a shit ton of elk.. you better be in shape if you’re chasing them in the mountains. The deeper you get once the season starts, the higher probability of success.

As for outfitters, check out Bear Track, Triple 3 or Bob Barlow. There are a bunch of others, but don’t know much about them.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Sorry. Just checking back on this.  Bob Barlow was booked, but referred me to Bob granstorm.  Whom, I booked with.

Plan B was to do exactly what you said at Bud Love. As that’s where we were antelope hunting a year ago and sort of watched some of them.  But I think I’m in good hands.

Hope you have a good plan to get any access into there.  The Bud Love is probably one of the most restrictive areas in the state to access and hunt elk.

Outfitter has private land access.

I knew that going into it from doing DIY hunts for Pronghorn for 2 years.  Very little access, especially in deep.  So when we drew the tags I'm like... Yep, outfitter time.

@Foxtrot8

You’re in great hands. I would have referred him but I don’t even think he has a website any longer, figured he was just returns and word of mouth. You’re going into some thick and awesome country, special place. I know it very well, but Bob knows it better than anyone. You’ll be accessing his camp through the ranch I guide at. I’ll come over and say hi if I see you guys going in or out. Shoot me a message with your dates.
