Heads up: City Hall, Eagle, ID Open House to learn more about progress (or lack thereof) of building these two ranges.

“The Future of Shooting Sports” Open House will be a poster-board session to provide the public the opportunity to review information and ask questions regarding development of the Crowfoot Shooting Range and their request for donation and the status of the development of the City’s shooting Sport Park including planned improvements and obstacles to construction. A short survey and comment opportunity will be available on City of Eagle's webpage from August 14th to August 22nd.
Open House Date and Time: August 14, 2025 – 4:00pm to 6:00pm
Location: Community Hall at Eagle City Hall – 660 E Civic Ln. Eagle 83616

PS: As an FYI, the Eagle City range's archery portion is now built and running, really nice! I have no use for it, but folks into that Robin Hood stuff might be turned on.

Is this different than the range by Avimor? I could've sworn I saw a sign saying future home of some range driving past Avimor last night, but I don't think the name on the sign was Crowfoot?

Two different ranges.

Crowfoot is a private ($$$ membership) range planned to be built right near Avimor community.

The Eagle Shooting Sports complex is a a city run public park/recreation area north of the city. Right now, Phase 1 (archery 3D target walk + static range) is open. Rifle range met problems so still in planning phase.

The name on the sign wasn't Crowfoot, it started with an S if I remember right.

Seven Gates Investments is seeking a commercial range permit for a range located above Hidden Springs.  It might be that range if it started with an S.

It sounds like a mess and a half.

That was it. It started with an "S". Is this a different range than the already existing one that is having the CUP issues with Ada County currently?

That other range sounded more like someone's private property up above Hidden Springs. It skylined on people's radar because people complained about the noise, found out a gent was doing classes up there, maybe no permits or such. Maybe wasn't needed, but reading between the lines, it sounds like someone didn't like the noise, started making waves for the range.
(As an aside, that private range isn't too far away from where Gemtech did silencer metering / shooting all the time well before Hidden Springs got huge. It's legal to shoot there, but the newbies moving in and making that area suburbia didn't know there were existing private ranges.)

Summary of the current situation there.

Either way, that range and situation is not either of the ranges that Eagle City Hall is addressing today. I guess I'll wander down to Eagle City and see what's new.

Overview:

• Emmett Rod & Gun Club (been there forever, nice little private range) is the Westernmost dot.
• Eagle Shooting Sports Park (City run, archery only right now, new administration trying to get out of building the gun part) is the next eastern dot labeled "Eagle".
• Crowfoot (planned private range that's trying to get Eagle City to subsidize / sponsor money to them, giving them a political out to not build the city range.) is the red dropped pin.
• Private property / range that's getting picked on for noise is the farthest East dot.

The open house went down, looked moderately attended when I was there. Demographic was mostly older folks, male, so I assume shooters were represented.  :D

If anyone wants to chime in on the survey, it's here: Future of Shooting Sports in Eagle ID

Just know that the questions are slanted big time to allow the city to get out of what they assumedly view as a sticky mess. Only one path forward is given with any positive spin, the others are flavored to make it look like only an idiot that wants to get sued would continue to build a city range in Eagle.

(Not mentioning the fact that if they DON'T follow through, there will be a suit by the engineering firm that got left eating the development costs.)

The impression seemed to be that the new city management doesn't want to follow through on obligations and money already spent.
So the meeting was basically an advertisement for Crowfoot as a convenient bait-and-switch / easy out. (No offense to Crowfoot: the range looks good, the people seem nice, and I hope it does well. But the citizens supported a City-owned range, not donating a quarter-mil of tax dollars instead to a private entity that Eagle won't have any control / ownership over.)

Eh. It's leaving a bad taste. They basically shut down / gave away the BLM land access we all used to shoot on, promising a nice safe city range. Now that there's nowhere much to shoot, the city isn't following through. Developers got their land to build homes for newbies, shooters lost their impact areas, and... "progress."
:/

Waking this thread up to bring attention to an Eagle City Council Public Hearing July 21, 2026  5pm

Some at Eagle City Council seem to be proposing that all shooting be made illegal except if you have permission from a private landowner (good luck getting permission from strangers), making most common/traditional areas illegal. BLM land seems like it is getting squeezed out.

Shooting is currently legal on property 20 acres or larger when the discharge will not endanger persons or property, or on any property owned by the Bureau of Land Management.
"A proposed revision would strike the language allowing firearms discharge on acreage of a certain size or BLM land, replacing it with language allowing firearms discharge “for any area specifically established by Resolution of the City Council.

Proposed map of permissible shooting areas (which shows there are not really any public areas available.)

Commentary: Naturally, it's for safety reasons - weird that when you put those huge Valnova and Avimor housing developments in what used to be a safe impact area, they get... impacts.

Eagle had a nice public shooting range planned and budgeted to start, but then rugpulled it and made it an archery-only area (which wasn't the point at all of it initially.) Now that that has been stalled out, no one seems to know where to shoot.

Article on Eagle's Shooting Sports area changes

The positive is that there are definitely people on the City Council that recognize that enthusiasts abilities are being squashed, and are sympathetic. They are open minded and looking for solutions.
