Good afternoon, My mom lives in Sierra Vista and every time I visit I look around and see miles of opportunity to shoot ELR. I shoot light gun with a 300 Norma shooting 245 Berger’s. When we come out in December I will probably drive and would love to get a shoot in. Are there any organized elr shoots in the region? If not is there anyplace I could set up and shoot out to 2,600 or so? I’ve got the targets and can drag them with me. Thanks! |

To my knowledge there are not matches I would classify as ELR in our area. The Sierra Vista range only goes out to 500 yards, and I only know of one (Varmint Match) that has targets to 500. To get past a mile I have to drive @ 4 hours. If I bring the equipment to AZ I would like to get out further. Maybe I can find a spot on BLM to stretch it out unless that’s frowned on there. |

Not sure where you are going to find distances like that out here. The terrain here is deceiving and most open spaces are loaded with washes and Mesquite scrub making LOS difficult. There may be places on the West side over the mountains, but I am not sure. Here is the Cochise GIS site, it has the state trust and BLM plots. Also Be aware the San Pedro Riparian Area is off limits to shooting, and some BLM land is actually on Fort Huachuca and not accessible to the public. I have a place in SV, and shoot there pretty often. I also have a .50, and have thought about trying to get out to a mile or more. My concern with that is that most of the open spaces are used by other people, and you can't really know if anyone is moving into or through your range fan. I like to shoot in the Whetstone mountains (South of I-10, North of 82, West of 90, 31.81250895470783, -110.4085293956421 -ish). It is BLM/National forest, although surrounded by State Trust land. My solution to this problem is to find a location where I am in an elevated position, and place my targets on a distant ridgeline (on the facing slope) also in an elevated position. With my binoculars, I should be able to see what's going on between me, and my targets, and my shots will not be able to go past my targets. FWIW, I haven't done this yet, but when I do, this is how I'm going to do it. On the map, and from my exploring there, I should be able to pull this off. |

Shooting where there isn’t the possibility of people entering the danger cone is good. We shoot on private mostly. I have still had trespassers, usually on horse back ride into my shooting lanes. There usually response is along the lines of “how dare you shoot where I am riding.” My response is usuallly “The fastest way off our property is right down there. I suggest you leave right now.” If they give me lip my next comment is “wait right here while I call the sherrif.” That usually gets a rude comment and their ass moving. |

A lot of BLM os closed to shooting- depends on the office in charge... all that open space is a checkerboard of State and BLM land so its impossible to not cross into one or the other. Best bet is to find private land (difficult) to shoot on. Also much of the Natl Forest is closed to shooting due to tree huggers. |

You can buy an Arizona State Trust Land permit to allow you to use the State trust land without being a trespasser. But, it does not allow you to shoot recreationally on the State Land.
