Hopefully i can get some info from the NC crowd. My daughter accepted a job offer in Wilmington and I know very little about that area. She is 23 and an ER Nurse. She is moving there by herself and I want to get some good info I can pass along. She is currently in Ohio so it will be a little different. She will be looking for apartments next month, she is going down for several days. So what areas in and around Wilmington to avoid? Anyone actually know any apartments that are nice and safe and semi affordable? What if any good advice do you guys have for that city/area. Good stuff and bad. Any info would be appreciated. best wishes ! Wilmington is a generally nice area -- but like a lot of places in the South has gotten very congested. it has the typical downsides of any southern city with a populated area over 250,000. there are a few areas -- really bad so be careful -- gangs, drugs, etc. IN GENERAL -- closer to the beach : better. closer to the Cape Fear River : worse. in terms of crime density. they have tried to gentrify the river front area over the years with mixed results. i have been to the Wilmington area 100s of times but have never lived there. |

As the reply above asked, where is she going to be employed? I just retired from public safety with the city so I am fairly familiar with the area. Stay away from north of market st. 30th st area to be exact. Also stay away from greenfield and 16th st area. Right around the port is still fairly rough but in the process of gentrification. If she wants to stay down town it will depend on where as there are still pockets of problem areas. On the flip side, they are putting in a new development called river lights which is quite nice. It is off of River rd. toward the south end of New Hanover county/Wilmington. The Pointe at 17th and Independence is very nice as well. On the North end of the county I would look at Mayfaire area. Station rd and Old Maccumber have some nice apartments. Feel free to ask if you have anymore questions. Hope this helped. |
