You guy probably hear this all the time.
Heading into dc to see some sights. Staying in Foggy Bottom Residence Inn for the weekend. This will be my first trip. Love the history. We have admission to the White House on Friday. Is there any intel on what should be a priority to see or best times to go? What about seeing monuments after closing times? Walking around ? Places to stay away from? Places to eat dinner? Anything you can share would be appreciated. Thanks Rex |

Obviously you could spend a lot of time in the Smithsonian. Mount Vernon is worth seeing despite all the 8th graders. If you do, pay a visit to George's grave. You can ride public transportation to see it. A slightly more unusual stop is the Lincoln Cottage at the Old Soldier's Home. It's where Lincoln spent much of the Civil War. I think you need to get tickets ahead of time and it isn't very public transportation friendly. Gunston Hall is another more unusual stop but you need a car to get there even though it isn't far from Mount Vernon. It's George Mason's house and it is better made and much quieter than Mount Vernon. From where you are staying you can walk up to the Washington Hilton and see the spot where Reagan was nearly assassinated. It's where the little covered doorway is (the cover was built afterwards). Then keep walking and either head into Adams Morgan or over to U Street for DC's best Ethiopian restaurants. I could go on. |
