Daughter is starting school in Charlottesville in the fall. Not happy about this situation: https://cvillerightnow.com/news/208802-cfd-responds-to-fire-at-free-bridge-encampment/ Apparently, Mayor Juandiego Wade(D)’s response has been: “meh. This is a lifestyle choice.” Alternatively, his office “responded” to reports of camp residents defecating in the river by: installing two porta-John’s, at city expense. How can we persuade the town of Charlottesville to clear out this dangerous and illegal campsite? |

UVa is about 95% of the economy of the City of Charlottesville. |

I assume your daughter is going to UVA? I wouldn’t stress too much about it. My son graduated last year from UVA and he never knew this existed before the recent media/social media attention. I also spend a fair amount of time at the hospital and various medical complexes down there. Also had no clue. It’s not like this is anywhere close to Grounds. UVA is a big school with a big image to uphold. If there was a chance this could hurt that big reputation by hurting a student there it would’ve been taken care of long ago. |

Sometimes ignorance is a bliss, I guess. I went to Old Dominion University and it was before they had a campus alert system in place. I never felt in danger or anything as I was a commuter and was in and out of classes all hours of the day. I thought I was "safe" because it had a campus police that they claim is just like the normal police except it is specifically for the campus and surrounding areas. It wasn't until after I graduated that I went for my masters I realized the school and surrounding area were bad. I never realized how frequent robbery and home invasions were around the campus until they tried to make the campus from a commuter school to a campus one. I'm still not convinced they fixed it even today, they just got better at covering it up and what to report/release to the public. I also want to stress that a lot of these campuses are built into rather harsh areas. Like Old Dominion University has the projects and other section 8 housings around the area. It causes a crime problem that they can't resolve. |

Had a sense of it from being on the grounds for a tour with my daughter, and noticing all the pro-HAMAS flyers around campus. I was a bit reassured when I went to a UVA football game; they had a flyover by military jets and everyone in the football stadium cheered. But I’m discovering the problem runs much deeper at UVA. | We went to the UVA campus maybe four years ago and went on a "student guided" tour. We saw interesting things for sure, but every stop's lecture included how UVA used slaves for work. As for myself, I hate the long-banned institution of slavery, bought with 100,000s of lives, but I don't need it to be the constant theme of a tour. |

That is the norm now at any historical location. Half of the tour at Monticello is about slavery, same thing at James Madison's Montpelier. The craziest one I’ve seen is the girls scouts museum in Savannah GA, the majority of the tour is about how evil Juliette Gordon Low's family was |

Basically propaganda to push a narrative out to force people who vote otherwise be seen as some sort of "evil" person. If you don't vote THIS way then you are evil like [insert some person or group]! It seems to make sense though because a lot of these places are funded and controlled by political groups. |
| Pooping murderous hobos are the least of your worries. Getting a kid to graduate from UVa without them becoming a raging lib is the worst risk. Just avoid the Freebridge/Pantops area and hobos are easy to dodge. But Leftists run every aspect of Cville/Albemarle...not so easy to avoid. |

I don't think local opinions have changed much, but in the Trump years it has become palpably worse here, outwardly hostile. We moved here in 2011, it was tolerable because this place was an exception politically to an otherwise mostly reasonable state, but it didn't matter. You could be you. This was an area where a preppie college kid, a blue-voting doctor, a "silent majority" middle-right professional, a Bible-thumping conservative, a hillbilly and a jobless lazy commie could all be at the gas station at the same time and nobody paid another mind. Now I feel unwelcome, like I need to keep my mouth shut and just Get the family TFO of here as soon as we can retire and pack up our stuff. I used to feel a sense of community, even among people who I knew didn't believe and vote as I did. TDS changed all of that. People came out in favor of ridiculous stuff and then doubled down. "Pastors" advocating for all kinds of un-Christian political policies and lifestyles, schools that put sick, woke agenda ahead of education, authorities unwilling to deal with people and behavior that is tearing at the fabric of civilization. The left's willingness to use violence, and to tolerate violence against political opponents is downright scary. It's not just the obvious crazies, it's having to go to a doctor or dentist and wonder, "did this guy vote for someone who would send me to prison or have me killed? Would he be happy to see removed from society?" |
