This in the Waterbury paper today re the Glock switch law just passed. The fee has been $70 for a long time, did they increase it to $140? If so when did that happen, I sure missed it. The legislation also requires local handgun permitting authorities to refund $70 of the $140 application fee for a pistol permit to an applicant if the authority fails to act on the application within statutorily established deadlines. |
No the permit fee didn't increase. There are two $70 fees that are paid during the process. One to the town the other to the state. The bill sets up the method of requesting a refund of the $70 you pay the locals when submitting the application to them when the locals go past the eight week approve or deny statutory time line. Laughed out loud at their claiming it would be a negligible impact financially (the state may be negligible but town's won't  ). For some towns they'll be refunding everyone's $70 until they miraculously find a way to start approving in under eight weeks. My guess is that it will take a fight to get towns to cough up the $70. Towns will fight tooth and nail to not do so. Right now there isn't a specific process spelled out in the new language of how to go about requesting that $70 refund on or after 10/1/2026.The general fee process for the pistol permit is as follows (may vary by town): Local authority fee: $70.00 Fed fingerprint/Background check fee: $12.50-$16.50 (depends on town) DPS background check fee: $50.00 After temp permit approved the state permit fee: $70.00 Total fees not including course fees for the permit run $202.50 to $206.50. PS: Here is the specific language being added to section 29-30 (e): "... or (2) the local permitting authority fails to discharge any obligation applicable to such local permitting authority pursuant to subdivision (1) of subsection (b) of section 29-28a or subsection (b) or (c) of section 29-29 within the applicable time limits established under said subdivision or subsections, in which case the local permitting authority shall refund seventy dollars to the applicant. A refund issued pursuant to the provisions of subdivision (2) of this subsection shall not alleviate the local permitting authority from discharging any obligation specified in said subdivision or subsections after such applicable time limits." |

I'd have thought they'd have increased the fee to some intolerable level. From time to time one of the Democrats proposes doubling the fee. Last time it was around 2001 where it went $35 to $70. Fortunately, for now, the Dem majority has been content to leave it at $70 for the local and for the state. |
