The wife and I are wanting to take the camper to the beach without kids next summer, 2027. Looking for suggestions on places that are more attuned to couples and adults and aren't necessarily family-focused. No, we are NOT swingers. Just looking for places where families aren't the priority. Trying to tap into local knowledge here. Thank you |

Check out the Emerald Isle RV Resort. The outer ring of camp spots near beach are cool. Plenty of stuff for adults to do. Best bet for an experience would be to take 64 to the coast and spend a few hours on Roanoke island few museums Then turn south on 12. Several camp spots heading to Hatteras. Jump on ferry to ocracoke short ride. Eat at the pier waiting for next ferry to Cedar island like 3 hour ferry? While waiting there is a neat museum across from parking lot. From cedar island head to emerald island camp ground. Alternate would be to start at Currituk and take 12 all the way down to bald head lighthouse near Wilmington. USS North Carolina is an awesome museum ship self guided tour. So there are a few ideas for you. 1) straight to camp ground. 2) 3 day adventure at the beach to include a couple ferry rides. 3) a week long highway 12 adventure |

If you are coming from that far away, I would recommend do it right and going on out to the Outer Banks. If planned out in advance, depending on camper type and how frequently you want to relocate, you can do the entire NC barrier islands from North to South or vice versa in a week. Wife and I have done it three times. Our second trip was on motorcycles, after spending a few days at Myrtle Beach Bike Week, and I sorely missed my 4Runner we took on the first trip 25 years ago. Beach driving is the bomb if you have 4x4. Our last trip was in a rented Winnebago Revel on a 4x4 Mercedes chassis. It did equally great on interstates from our home in WNC to the many beaches and back. I drove the beaches to my heart's content on that trip. Hatteras is the best area for beach driving and shore fishing, even if just spectating all the fishermen and their wild rigs set up for just that. Lot's of local restaurants in each small town along the way. The northern end around Nags Head is much more commercialized with chain restaurants and shopping centers, thus kids are involved. Things become more sparse the further south you go. Howard's Pub was a unique experience down on Ocracoke. Their bartender makes mean Long Islands. Had to let wifey wheel us back to our campsite after a couple teas that night. Howard's Pub If interested in the beach driving aspect, Frisco Campground stands out in my mind. Frisco Campground It has very decent shower facilities, and is ideal if you seek a bit of isolation. One major plus to this location is that there is a huge free air compressor right across the street from the beach entry/exit. Maintaining proper air pressure in tires between highway and beach is crucial. It becomes tiresome managing air pressure with a portable air compressor. Monitoring the ferry schedules is an important consideration as well. On the other hand, If you are into glamping with a nice pool and gym while parking in a single location for an entire stay, this trip is not what you are looking for. Although I am a mountain native Tarheel, I love the OBX adventure. Miles and miles of beach where you can always find a section to pitch a couple chairs with no one else in site. At least that is how I remember it five years ago. |
