... but your new governor, as much as I dislike him, voiced his support for allowing beer and wine in your grocery stores. I support freedom. Is this something y'all can support?

I do like the idea of buying beer & wine at convenience and grocery stores, as long as they leave the liquor stores alone. I wonder what the impact will be in the independent liquor stores if/when they lose the monopoly on beer and wine sales, which seems like the bulk of what they sell. We have so many liquor stores now that it's really not that hard to grab a six-pack. I live in central MD near BWI and I pass within a quarter mile of no less than three liquor stores on my 10 mile commute to/from my office. Probably 20 within a 10 mile radius of home. I'd bet some of those stores fold if they lose beer/wine sales. I lived in VA for about 5 years and never did get used to the 'ABC Stores' for buying liquor. Limited hours (they ALL closed at 5pm on Christmas eve and stayed closed all day Christmas), price fixing and the selection was limited to the same standard stuff in the Gordonsville store as it was in the Louisa store. PA is the same way with their "State Stores". I very much prefer our independent liquor stores. I drink Elijah Craig and buy the 1.75 liter bottle. At one local store, it over $65, at another, it is $54 - nice to have a choice of what to pay for it. I see it's $65 at the Louisa store right now. Are you guys still limited to 100 proof or less? |
