I had to renew my driver license today so I stopped at the local DMV. There was a young (20 something) Hispanic women there. It was obvious she could not read or speak English. Does Wisconsin have a read and speak English requirement to get a drivers license? There was a Hispanic man with her coaching and translating for her. |

| From what I found, the test for a learners permit is available in Spanish & English, so apparently you don't have to be able to read any road signs to drive. That should make you feel safe out there. On the DOT website there was a notice about scams and it was also listed in FRENCH! WTF? You should have just asked the guy behind the counter if ability to read and speak is needed to be issued a license. I wonder if he'd have just told you or ask why you wanted to know. He'd probably accuse you of being racist. |
| Maybe insurance companies should require drivers be able to read and speak English before they will insure them? Actually, I wonder how many who can't read or speak English have insurance anyway. Seems that being unable to read English would be a big factor in their insurability. |
