Hello everyone, I was hoping to gain some insight about Idaho. My family and I are strongly considering moving to Idaho in the next year or two, we plan on going there for a weekend or two to check things out. We are primarily looking in the treasure valley area (Boise, Star, Meridian, Tampa, etc). -What are the areas to stick to or avoid? - How is the shooting around the area? I frequently do long distance shooting, 2 or 3 gun, blm shooting, night shooting, etc. -Looks like NFA items and CCW are good to go, any possible changes of this in the future? -How are job opportunities? Coming from the Phoenix area, there are plenty here. But I know this is a much smaller metro area. -How are the winters? They seem mild from research, under 30" of snow. -Are the roads heavily salted? -How is the hunting? is it difficult to get drawn for elk or deer? Arizona is similar to a lottery system, not sure about Idaho -Has there been a large influx in liberals? Seeing what's happened to Arizona, I'm looking to avoid moving to another state that may change the same as Arizona has. Lastly, anything else I should know about or consider? Especially looking to hear from anyone who has already moved from Arizona. Thank you everyone for your time and help on this. |

I've lived in Caldwell for over 35yrs, there's been a great deal of change the past 10yrs.  But to answer your questions as best I can: 1) I've heard of some dicey areas of Caldwell & Nampa, but I can't be more specific than to avoid the north side of Caldwell (north of 10th Ave). The closer you get to Boise, the more expensive housing is (and the more liberal, unfortunately). 2) There's a public range near Lake Lowell, but if you take your shooting seriously, then check out Parma R&G Club: Parma Gun Club, possibly the best range in the PNW w/dedicated tactical pistol/rifle areas, measured berms out to 500m (900m if you know where it is), .22, shotgun & members-only areas. 24/7 unsupervised, great if you want to get some night practice in. Only real downside for me is it hosts lots of matches so you have to check the calendar for match dates. It's about a 40-minute drive West of Caldwell on Hwy 20/26. 3) No changes I'm aware of, latest development was the allowing of unlicensed CCW by any adult, resident or not. Parma used to have nighttime MG tracer shoots, I don't know if that's still a thing. 4) Unknown, sorry. 5) Winters are mild, I chose the TV area because you get all the seasons w/o extremes. average winter snowfall is relatively light, we get a few weeks of hot weather during the summer. On Level Pay, my monthly gas & electric are $48 & $57/mo. 6) Roads are sanded, not salted.  7) I no longer hunt, can't help you w/that, sorry. 8) We have been getting more liberals the past 10yrs, but we seem to be drawing more conservatives fleeing the blue states than liberals. However, the Boise area has become the hotbed for liberals in this state.  9) There's been a lot of new subdivisions going up the past 10yrs, but recently it looks like there's a push to build apartments anywhere and everywhere they can shoehorn one in. Doesn't make sense to me, who are they planning on renting all these units to? Population density has really gone up to the point I plan local trips around traffic patterns. 10) If you can swing it, come up and check the area out for a few days, get a feel for if this area suits your needs. I'm in Healthcare, and there is not a shortage of opportunities in skilled fields. However, the salaries are depressed from what I am used to, and likely what you are used to in PHX We currently live (rent) in Meridian and have been very happy. We just bought in Kuna as our money went a little further and we could afford a property with a couple of acres and a barn for my daughters horse. |

Start by going to Google. On the search bar, type "ar15 .com forum moving to Idaho" Read those threads. You'll probably need to know where your gonna work before you know where your gonna live. Otherwise you'll likely have a long commute with traffic. Short term Rent while you shop for a house/build a house....flexibility to move if needed. Consider buying land and building a house or barndonadium. If your coming here with 1/2 million or more, you'll be able to do whatever. Less than that you'll have to be smart with your money. I would look at Kuna, Mora, Middleton, Star. If you got money....Eagle, Meridian, NE Boise, maybe lake lowell. Parma, Nampa have the best ranges for shooting sports. Emmett is a small range. BLM land is all over. Winter sports during winter. Summer sports like Rafting, riding bikes, camping, off roading are all available. Restaurants, breweries, bars, concerts, places of interest are all here. If your a vet.....get vet plates on vehicles. Cheaper registration, state parks are free. Best time to visit is late April-June or Late September-October . |

| I am a Native Idahoan. I would rather live somewhere else due to all the idiots and jerks that have moved here in the past few years. However, I am currently stuck. There are plenty of better locations that are also more affordable such as South Dakota, Kansas and Nebraska. |
