Code, weld, machine (not just push a button), model (3D), build from scratch (plasma table, 3D printers, foundry work/models, molds, casting and final milling, (milling machines, mullers) powder coat, design.....you name it. He started 3D modeling when he was still in junior high. My son has not asked me for help. I'm just a dad who has a son who is hurting. My son has been working at a place that was his pride and joy. It is on the downhill slide due to the ego-driven insanity of its owner. It has always been his joy to take a project from idea to completion. He has done it all. He is 40. I sat across the table from him last week and looked at the pain in his eyes and listened to the sadness in his voice that what he had worked on for nearly a decade was crumbling around him. He is convinced that there is little market for a mechanical engineering "Renaissance man" anymore. He left home at 18 and has been making it entirely on his own for more than 20 years. He lives like a monk. All he does is work (which he loves) goes home at night to eat and sleep, and then go back to work the next day. No wife, girlfriend, or kids. Between work and school (he is in his final year of a mech e degree from UH) he is kinda lost and overwhelmed. He didn't ask me for help. I'm just reaching out to GD to see if anyone has any ideas or knows a company that does prototyping from the beginning and end. I lost my oldest son 29 years ago. My daughter is bipolar and frequently out-of-control. My surviving son is absolutely all I have left of the first 50 years of my life. His mother is useless. You're helping me as much as you are helping him. |

Has he thought about going solo and consulting? Has he had any contact with customers? That kind of prototyping seems to be rare these days, but there are still some vertically integrated places around like racing or those that consult for auto/aerospace industries. Also have him check with integrators that specialize in mfg. industry. |
