New Study Confirms Racial Disparity in New Jersey Carry Permits Bearing Arms contributor John Petrolino has been documenting the many issues with New Jersey's post-Bruen carry regime for months now, from the number of denials based on subjective standards (a no-no, according to the Supreme Court) to the excessive wait times many applicants are forced to endure. In May 2024 John revealed that Black applicants for a carry permit were more than twice as likely to be denied as their white counterparts; a revelation that caught the attention of researchers at Rise Against Hate, who decided to dig into the data on their own. After months of research the group has released their study on permit-to-carry application outcomes, and they too found "significant racial disparities" in permit denials. In fact, the disparities appear to be even worse than what Petrolino was able to document. According to Rise Against Hate's data, Black applicants are more than ten times as likely to be denied a permit to carry than white applicants. While some counties appear to be issuing permits in a colorblind or racially neutral fashion, the disparities are immense in places like Ocean County, where white applicants are 50 times more likely to be approved for a permit compared to Black applicants. Gun loaded with 17 bullets found in New Jersey man's carry-on bag at Syracuse airport The 33-year-old man of Somerset, New Jersey was stopped by Transportation Security Administration officers at a checkpoint after they detected a firearm in the man's backpack, according to airport police documents obtained by Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard. The man had a 9mm caliber handgun loaded with 17 bullets, including one in the chamber, said Lisa Farbstein, a spokesperson for the TSA. The man said he forgot to place the handgun in his vehicle's trunk, according to a TSA news release Monday. When asked to show his New York license for the gun, the man said he only had active and current gun permits in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Police said the handgun was stored without a holster. The magazine contained an additional six rounds of 9mm ammunition. Assistant District Attorney Jed Hudson was contacted and said no criminal charges would be filed against the man, according to police documents. The police kept the gun for safekeeping and are working with a Federal Firearms Licensee to get the gun back to the man in New Jersey, according to an airport spokesperson. National Interstate Reciprocity: A Policy Whose Time Has Come There are a few states that have stubbornly resisted recognizing the rights of their residents and visitors to carry handguns in public for self-protection. The list includes California, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York. None of these states recognize concealed licenses issued in other states, nor do the District of Columbia, Illinois, Oregon or Rhode Island. Yet most of these states have a thriving tourist economy and are happy to accept the money of out-of-state travelers. When those visitors bring their lawfully carried handguns, accepted by the vast majority of other U.S. states, they may be in for a rude awakening. So, I just submitted my renewal for my permit online and all four references completed their questionnaires within minutes of me submitting. When I checked out, it cost me $76 total, but said that I must pay another $150 to my local PD. At what point do I pay that fee? Should I head down there later today and hand them a check, or do I pay at the end when I go to pickup the permit? It wasn't really clear. Looking to expedite by any means possible, as my current permit expires in about 18 days. Thanks in advance. |

I dropped it off within the hour. On Monday afternoon I got the email with my new permit download link. |

So you have to do the paperwork online, pay the state online, then wait a few days, lets call it a week, for them to receive and process your app so they know what to attach the payment to, then go pay at the counter M-F 8:30-4:30. Then you can expect to wait a couple months for anything back. And this is just for the FID or pistol permits. God know how fucked up they are with carry permits... |
