I spend a good bit of time up in Corolla and usually make it up there a few times a year. I’ve been wanting to start bringing my 1548 War Eagle with a 30hp tiller more often and using it around Currituck Sound. I’ve seen the Whalehead ramp firsthand recently and know how muddy and nasty it has gotten. The last time I looked at it, the first section was basically caked in mud before you ever got to decent water. I know the county has been talking about dredging/restoring that channel, but obviously that doesn’t help much right now. Has anybody actually launched a small aluminum boat out of Whalehead lately? I’m not talking about a bay boat or anything heavy — just a shallow-draft 1548. Is there ever enough water with the right wind to make it worth trying, or has it gotten to the point where you guys wouldn’t even bother? Also, what about the boat ramp/access up on the 4x4 beach? I’ve spent plenty of time up there but haven’t really looked at it from the standpoint of launching and regularly running a boat out of there. Anybody here use that ramp with a jon boat or similar setup? How is the access, bottom, and water depth compared to Whalehead? I know Sound Park, Kitty Hawk, Poplar Branch and Coinjock are options, but I’m trying to figure out what guys who actually spend time on the north end are doing now. It would be nice not to trailer all the way south every time I want to put the boat in. Also interested in any firsthand advice on running a 15' aluminum boat around the northern Currituck Sound. I know the wind can move a ton of water in and out and things can change quickly depending on direction. Mostly just looking for current local knowledge on Whalehead, the 4x4 ramp, and what everyone is using these days. |
