Sure. Best bet is to keep your opinions to yourself until you discern the character and flow of your locale. In my case I was quiet for almost two years until a stealth lefty tried to insert herself on the rural school board for the school my daughter would be attending kindergarten at the following year, at which point I spoke out against the lunacy, eventually ran against her and won a seat with voting 2:1 in my favor. There's room and housing prices are even waning a bit but everything else is expensive and the people aren't overly friendly until you get to know them. Any area I'd want to live is 80% plus red voters and many of them are refugees like myself and know why they vote that way. Winter can hit hard and fast so have a plan and 4WD along with a backup power & heat solution (this winter has mostly been an exception in the NW area). Get here, be quiet, be helpful and don't buck the way of life, which is decidedly independent, somewhat rugged and quite individualistic (out in the county at least) and you'll fit in pretty well. |

I see lots of OR and WA plates all over Flathead. When they drive like jerks I think “citiot”, as opposed to a Montana plated vehicle driving like a jerk where I think, “they should know better”  . Your vehicle matters too. Porsche Cayenne at the dump? City folk play acting at mountain life. BMW or Audi tailgating me through the 25mph zone in town? City folk who get a brake check. Any pickup but a Ridgeline or Maverick tooling along? We could probably be friends. |

| Excellent topic to find. I am retiring in about three years and am thinking of looking to move in the Montana area. I am from NY but definitely not the city but western NY and have been conservative my whole life. Do you fine folks have any suggestions for a potential area to visit for possible future home purchase as well as an area that would have possibilities for part time employment? I'm definitely not rich but fairly in the middle class. |

That's annenuated a bit by the interest rates but it's still hard to find something between a Montucky shack and $1M+. In the west Libby and Thompson Falls areas are nice but some of the same price pressures exist. Don't know outside of that. I hear Butte is fairly decent these days though. You also have to determine how remote you want to be or how close into town for "services". More remote is more independent but harder to get emergency services. I can't really understate how prepared you should be if you're out a ways. --I've spent 5 hours in a Bobcat pushing a heavy late winter snow storm around the last couple days, for example. |

As was previously covered; your needs for services / comforts will dictate a lot of where you end up. If you’re okay being snowed in or not going anywhere for several days or a week, your world is a lot bigger in terms of affordable land/ places. If you need access to medical/ other services, you will have to be relatively close to one of the urban centers of the state; the price goes up quickly as you get into the flat areas around the towns. Missoula and Bozeman are liberal in their political leanings and spending…city taxes reflect this. I think butte is the most affordable population center that’s…great falls isn’t bad either. GF gets wind, butte is high elevation and on the cold end. The east side of the mountains is generally colder and windier, and more affordable. |

I have met people from CA, WA & OR who have decided to chase the Montana Dream...they thought they were conservative until they moved to our state and were surprised (overwhelmed) with the amount of actual freedom we enjoy.
