Our son will start at ETSU this fall & it would be nice to know if there are any ARF members nearby who might be able to give him some local advice etc..... He's planning to be there for 7-8 years while he pursues his career in Medicine. |

There are a bunch around here  JC---->ETSU is in an interesting county in my opinion...JC is super $$$ on housing. Make sure he stays in campus dorms. They have added probably 100k housing units since 2020 just in Washington County 2/3 of county/city is good the other 1/3 he shouldn't be near there IMHO. The downtown has had major renovations the last 5 years, with breweries and great food of all ethinc groups. you can think of and its really safe due to location with all the hospitals. Police are doing a great job imo...there is always asshats. On that note you normally see Washington county plates with 1 of 4 different types. 1 with ETSU parking permits that valid 2 with Hospital permits 3 no permits but nice well kept vehicles. 4 the pos ones that will always be trashy, like being in ELPASO and seeing bl7e or yellow tags normally no license or insuranc3. Kingsport is a major no go IMHO. It is easily an 1 or 4 hour commute because I26 was never designed for the traffic. Between I81 and Boones creek/Grey area is an absolute shit show with traffic. There is easily 2 accidents a day between JC and Kingsport. Elizabethton is really close to etsu and its slowly being revamped. When it gets closer im sure some can give apartment (affordable) in old JC or E-town. If he likes History this area has more history in a 50 square miles than anything close. Every American skirmish or war has gone through E-town since before our country was a country Hey can start with researching a few things. State of Franklin, sycamore Shoals and the Carter house. Some of us associate our history with SOF... I could go on there are atleast 25 great places to visit within 45 minutes of etsu Great fishing,hiking etc |

Ha!  At my age, y'all would chew me up so bad it would be laughable  I'm lucky if I can hold it together long enough to finish my twice-monthly 6 hours of weedeating The last time I was in VA, I was headed West on I-81 hanging out the open driver side window shooting double handed middle fingers back Easterly while my wife steered from the passenger seat as we crossed into TN  .... And man let metell you what, it has so far been the best decision we ever made to get the h*ll out of that once upon a time long-ago good state. I wish we could have ended up in TN back in the early 90's. Now our son, on the other hand, he is young & full of energy so he might be into that stuff for sure

He will probably try to do his last 4 years at Quillen, if they accept him. From what I have heard from him, most of the medical colleges he prefers are very picky as regards who they accept. Sadly, I think they are all going more liberal. I hope he is ready for the onslaught.... I've advised him to say "Look, I just came here to learn to be a doctor; I did not come here to learn which political flavor of the day is popular". |
