Anybody else besides me not getting Amazon deliveries out of Milwaukee for the last 2 days? |

| Even if Amazon is running late, it beats the USPS. I think there have been more issues of deliveries to the wrong addresses. Our local village Facebook page always has posts from people wondering if anyone got their package or someone getting someone elses. Apparently reading is not a requirement for their drivers. |
I worked at USPS as a part time rural carrier in 1993-94, and I had a week long training session in Green Bay. They paid for my Holiday inn hotel bill, included a generous meal stipend, and I got paid an 8 hour per day salary. It was my most profitable week in the time I was there.  Part of training was a 4 hour tour of the mail sorting center in Green Bay. To be honest, you cannot grasp the enormity of what goes into mail delivery until you witness it first hand. The amount of mail that moves through each of these sorting facilities blows your mind. And 99% of it gets where it's destined, on time & undamaged. As one of the other trainees remarked "It's like a blizzard in here, and the snowflakes are all envelopes". I gained a new respect for what they do, and the actual thoroughness of the process as a whole. 1 million pieces of mail can arrive on time, and undamaged, and then 1 piece gets lost. That 1 that gets lost is all people talk about. IMO, what their downfall was with package deliveries lately, is relying too much on "modern" technology. Bar codes, etc. The more complicated it gets, the more complicated the problems are as a result, and the resolutions too, when something goes wrong. The sorting center I toured in Green Bay has been scaled back, same with many other regional ones, like Wausau. Or they were shut down completely. They built bigger centers with all new technology. Oak Creek & Oshkosh are the big ones now. I cut my carrier some slack, because "I been there, done that". I got a real good one now, a young guy in his 30s. I quit because I was part time with no benefits, and advancing to full time would take me 10 years, as seniority determined advancement, and not just from those in same post office, but area wide. Part time work interferred with my new locksmith business which I began here in 1991, which was really going strong by 1994. No regrets, even though I did enjoy the job. I had 5 dogs on my route that waited by the mailbox for me each day... because I brought them a milkbone. And 2 of customers became very good friends, and still are today. |
| I think a lot of all the tracking they do now sucks up a lot of their time. People want to know exactly where their package is and when it'll arrive. I'd assume most of that is automated, but someone still has to find the package and scan it and send a reply. At this point in time, if I order something and it's coming USPS I just figure a week and then just wait, but don't get me going on mail forwarding - that's a whole n'uther story. |

The tracking thing only existed with certified & registered mail back then, it was all done manually by a real person. The tracking today sucks, because like you said, everyone wants to know when it will arrive, and they get overwhelmed by it all. Myself included. For a recent example, I sent a package to North Dakota Tuesday of last week. It was scheduled to arrive on Monday. Trracking said it was still in Oak Creek WI on Monday, where it was since last Wednesday. It hadn't moved. Same tracking results were up on Tuesday this week. I checked it 10pm Tuesday, still showed Oak Creek. I planned on calling my post office Wednesday morning to see what the problem was. I checked it Wednesday morning again before making the call, and it had magically appeared in North Dakota overnight, was now "out for delivery". It was not "tracked" at all between the time it hit Oak Creek on July 16th, and was delivered on Wednesday the 22nd. It was delivered in North Dakota, 8 days after sending. And because of it's size, it cost $27 to ship. My route had a lot of "snowbirds". People who go south for the winter, forward their mail. I think you're one yourself. My sister is... she spends summers in St Germain, winters in Naples FL. The problems those people had were mostly because they filled out the forwarding forms incorrectly. But... that was 30 years ago. Most of that was done manually on paper forms (little green post cards), and were processed by the postmaster, or clerks in post office if it was big enough to have any. Now it's mostly done electronically, you fill out the requests online. I don't think they even have those little cards anymore. Computer errors are to blame I guess. |
| Yup, forwarding is all done on line. Then we get a few mailings confirming it (?) and stating if we didn't initiate it to advise them. Not a bad system, but it's things like getting Christmas cards in Florida in March that kind of makes me wonder. Full disclosure - our PO in little old Rudolph is not a high speed, low drag operation. |

Here's my forwarding screw up story. My daughter and 2 of her 3 kids lived with me for a few months, before moving to Green Bay. Her lease on her apartment here was expired, she didn't start her new job in Green Bay until later because the house she was renting there wouldn't be available until then.... that's why she delayed starting her new job (same employer both locations, more of a transfer). So she forwarded her mail to here in the interim. When she left for Green Bay, she again forwarded her mail to her new address in Green Bay. Only all mail to my address got forwarded. All my bills, all my incoming checks for my business... it all started going to Green Bay. It took me almost a week to get it all straightened out, as USPS had started notifying senders of my "move"... and they had to be notified again that it was in error, keep old address. Apparantly she checked a box saying "all mail at this address" or something like that. I had to fill out more forwarding forms for myself, my wife, my business, from Green Bay back to Eagle River.

I was a letter sorting machine trainee back in the mid 80s. You had to memorize some locations and their codes. By codes, I mean which of the 20 levers you pressed on the special keyboard. Both hands like a typist. I just missed the cut in the final hour. I'd like to say it was 250 items a minute, but I'm not sure anymore. I mean, it's been 40 years... I imagine most all of it has been replaced by scanning. Those LSMs were HUGE, took up a giant amount of space in a huge room, with dozens of keyboard stations. |
