Any rifle has to be a single shot, but a handgun can have a magazine? Meaning, a 10.5 inch braced AR in .450 is OK for deer hunting with a 5-7 round mag? I thought IA law was poorly written for not allowing .30-30(.35 minimum bullet diameter), but because of poor writing it allows .416 Barrett! |

Yeah, the handgun regulations specify "revolver or single shot" You can use an AR rifle in appropriate calibers in "single shot" config ie without a magazine on you. I know when they allowed that for rifles it raised questions about whether that meant it was now OK to use AR pistols without a magazine, but I can't remember whether the DNR ever answered that, or what the answer was. Plus you'd have to look up whether using an AR in IL that hasn't been registered under PICA is legal. I thought there might be an exception for firearms allowed for hunting, but honestly I'm not sure. |

Brother lives in Quincy. He was just asking what I would recommend he use. I told him to just come borrow my 629 or better yet, my .500, and practice. |

Semi auto's are legal in IL as long as the caliber is compliant and it is a single shot. How do you make a semi auto a single shot? Per the DNR the lack of a magazine in your possession makes it a single shot. There was a statement floating around a few years ago from the DNR stating this fact. |

Per IDNR . What rifles are legal to use in Illinois?Effective Jan. 1, 2023, single-shot rifles may be used to hunt deer in a caliber meeting the law's criteria. "Single shot" means a gun that is either manufactured or modified to only be capable of holding a total of one round in the magazine and chamber combined. "Single shot" does not include a rifle in the possession of a person who is also in possession of or in close proximity to a magazine that would allow the rifle to be capable of holding more than one round or a revolver. A rifle shall be considered a single shot if there is no magazine in possession of or in close proximity to a hunter in the field and the gun can only hold a total of one roun |

It is a sled, has no follower or spring. It is physically impossible for a sslb to hold any rounds, only one round can be hand fed at a time. It's basically a gap filler and falls in the description of "a magazine not capable of holding more than. one rond" The person you spoke to obviously does not fully understand what a single shot loading block is. |

Maybe some time in the future they'll drop the dia requirement to 6mm and that would allow 6BR and 6.5 Grendel. Or if they drop the commercially available load data part, one could probably create a wildcat from the WSSM cartridges. Similar to the IDC/IDR (Indiana deer cartridge). However, this is Illinois, so I'm not going to hold my breath. |
