My wife and I are traveling through and she booked an ABnB here last night. It's right north of 40, off of Rio Grnade. No complaints about the apartment, it was tastefully furnished and clean. Parking was in a fenced area. This got me wondering about vehicle burglary. Would this neighborhood be a high crime area?

Unfortunately it’s seems car burglaries and auto theft go up around Balloon Fiesta and doesn’t seem like any place in Albuquerque is 100% safe. Biggest tip is don’t leave anything in your car, especially overnight. That area being close to 40 if gated is probably decently safe, Hope you enjoy your time here.

Thanks, I really did. I wish I could convince my wife to move to this area, as I really love this part of NM. Perfect weather, great scenery and the culture is really neat.

Going to piggyback on this thread with a similar question. Staying in central ABQ this summer for a night at a hotel. Del Rey Neighborhood. Theres a cracker barrel, Trader Joes, Hilton nearby. Seems like a central business district. Bringing all my gear inside with me overnight. Should be safe? Not going for a walk or anything. Concerned about car theft or break in with out of state plates.

Grew up in Albuquerque, I don’t know a Del Rey neighborhood. You have cross streets?

Del Rey area is on the "north" end of town.  Not a bad area.  But I would not leave anything in my car in any hotel parking lot.

@Dangermouse78 Its the La Quinta at I25 and Ellison. There are several major hotel chains around there, but Google streetview shows light industrial. IDK anything about ABQ except its reputation for high crime. Needed a stop between the Radio Telescope array and Taos. Del Rey may just be a name Google gave it.

@Gourami yeah trying to figure out how to shuttle some of the more expensive items inside without attracting attention. Tripod etc are a bit bulky.

Ok, I know the area well. I used to work at the reddy ice plant right there. You’re going to be close to the cabelas. Which isn’t that big, just a standard cabelas, just fyi.

Main thing in that area is going to be transients moving along the freeway or moving up & down Paseo Del Norte. That’s a busy area, lots of coming & going. There is an industrial area just NW of that area. You should be fine, but taking things inside is a good idea. Just move your stuff in under the cover of darkness. Your vehicle should be fine during the day in that area. Good news is, that right behind that La Quinta is a 55+ mobile home community, which transients will avoid because old people are home & always watching the neighborhood. There’s an Ashley furniture, Target, & Lowe’s very close too, which attracts the transients, that’s what you’ll have to watch out for, those bums headed to Target, or more specifically moving behind Target.

When you get there, you’ll be confused because Ellison St becomes San Antonio Dr when you’re on the East side of I-25. It’s also a 2 lane road & it becomes very clogged during rush hours. It’s not crazy bad like Phoenix or Dallas, but just be aware that if you’re going anywhere during rush hours just add an extra 30 mins to get there. Another good thing about that area is there are no gas stations in the immediate area, which the bums are attracted too, so they should only be moving through the area not hanging out in it.

If you have any questions let me know.

Awesome. Thanks for the heads up. Will only be stopping for the night and likely arriving after dark. I'm contemplating just dragging the whole storage bin into the hotel with me as it has wheels and will hold my gear. Will be anything but stealth though.

Is the Sandia peak tram worth it? I'm mainly hanging out in NM for photography while my son hikes the Wheeler peak area with some other boys. @Dangermouse78
