My brother in law and I had a great pronghorn hunt. Opening morning, we spotted two small groups way up on a hillside, so we decided to go after them. Loaded up the packs and after a few ridgelines and 700 vertical feet, we had two bucks at 325 yards. I did a bunch of load development on the ultralight Tikka 300wsm, it was shooting 1/3 moa at 300 with the 162 Absolute Hammer at 3050. By bil bang flopped this cool goat, and there was no ground shrinkage when we got there. He has extra points poking out of the back of his horn bases. Did the gutting and gilling quick in the heat and hustled out of there. On the way back, we came across a large herd also up in the hills with a couple bucks acting pretty rutty. Looking forward to my late rifle buck hunt later on. Hope everyone else's seasons are going great. Attached File Attached File |

Then start out fresh Monday morning (season opener), and hunt the AG on the border of 3 and 6. Now, on a sadder note, my son and I had to return our bull elk tags because my daughter is going into the Air Force in a couple of weeks and her basic training graduation will be smack in the middle of our hunt dates. Wife and I turned in our cow tags so we can focus on her brothers sheep and our deer tags. It was a bummer but cow tags are much easier to draw than sheep tags. But then guess what shows up in my email??? An alternate spike tag! Wife really wants to pursue it, so I guess I'm going to try to fit it into our already very busy October hunting schedule. |

Congrats! What area did you get the spike alternate tag? Got my elk rifle load worked up, and have confirmed dope to 1,000 even though I limit myself to 600 or less on big game. So an area I am very, very familiar with. Good call on being comfortable with longish distance shots. Your area is big open country and the bulls stay pretty spooked during season. Most of the really big bulls I saw last year wouldn't let a guy get anywhere close to them. |

Last week my son and I went on his antelope HSE hunt, and it went about as I expected. We left Vegas at 1am and arrived at the unit at 6:50am. Within an hour my son's 2025 antelope hunt was over. Surprisingly, we were able to sneak within 180 yards, which is our closest shot on an antelope to date. The shot was a double pass through just behind the front shoulder, and to our amazement, she still managed to run 165 yards before expiring. Next week is Wyoming for a whitetail hunt, and then back to Nevada for my mule deer hunt. Good luck to everyone on their upcoming hunts. Tom

Went and did some scouting Sunday through Wednesday in 076, 077, 081. Saw about 120 elk total, 200ish antelope, and a whopping 3 doe mule deer. My dad and I went through country where we have always seen deer and saw none. The 3 we saw were all by themselves too. Not looking good for the deer population in that area. Pics because why not. Cow Elk Solo Hunt AAR Unit 113 - east of Ely, along the Utah border, south of the Goshute Indian reservation. Season ran from Sept. 25th-Oct. 4th. Filled my cow elk tag on the morning of the last day of the season. Shot fired at 7:30am, elk skinned, quartered, broken down, and finally transported back to the SUV by 4:30pm. 8 trips up and down the mountain and just about 9 hours to get it off the mountain. I can say with absolute certainty, I will never solo hunt an elk ever again... they're just too damn big!  Hunted for three days at the beginning of the season, in warm dry conditions, and only saw one cow on the morning of the first day. She headed east for the res and disappeared before I had a chance to catch up to her. After that it was nothing but bulls bugling and coming around to annoy me, including a beautiful 6x6 who spent 10 minutes trying to figure out where I was so he could walk over and brag about his sexual exploits. Bull elk during the rut are such complete douchebags...  Second trip out was for the last two days of the season, a Friday and Saturday. Weather was once again disgustingly beautiful on Thursday night so the elk were watered, well fed, and bedded down on the res before sunup and I saw nothing up and about. Luckily weather began to move in, late morning, with clouds, rain, and eventually thunderstorms throughout Friday afternoon, evening, and overnight. This change in the weather finally got the elk up and moving during daylight hours and gave me an opportunity to put one on the ground Saturday morning. Unit 113 primarily consists of the Kern mountain range and is located between the Schell Creek range near Ely to the west and the Deep Creek range just over the border in Utah to the east. To the best of my knowledge, the Kern's don't have a resident herd of elk but instead it is used as a migratory route by elk coming down off the Deep Creek range once the weather has turned and they then head west thru the Kern's to lower elevations and eventually the valley to the east of the Schell Creek range when the snow gets deep. If weather doesn't drive the elk down for the early season hunt your chances are slim, if weather comes in heavy for the late season hunt the elk move west out of the Kern's and your chances are once again quite slim. So, in my experience, weather plays a huge part in your chances of success in 113. Rifle was a Sako 75 stainless/synthetic chambered in .300 Remington Ultra Mag and I was shooting a 180 Nosler Partition bullet at approximately 3250 fps. Scope was a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44mm. Rifle has a custom muzzle brake, trigger work, and bedding. Distance for the shot lasered out at 192 yards, uphill at 12 degrees. She was with two other cows and they spotted me before I spotted them. Luckily there was a large bush nearby that I slowly moved behind for concealment. After 10 minutes of watching them they returned to feeding and forgot about me. Unfortunately they started feeding away from me and forced my hand. I crawled over to a sagebrush with an opening, rested the forearm of the Sako on a small branch, and found the group of elk in the Zeiss scope. She was the biggest of the three and quickly presented a near perfect broadside shot. After the shot broke I heard a satisfying THWACK and new it was a solid hit. The bullet entered just behind the right shoulder knicking a rib, continued on at an upward angle, then blew thru one of the lungs, cut the aorta which I believed allowed lung tissue to enter the chambers of the heart, pierced the diaphragm, and then tore up part of the liver before exiting high on the left flank. Meat damage was minimal and limited to rib meat. She took half a step, then got weak in the knees, knelt down, rolled on her side and was dead within 30 seconds. It was a great hunt, in a beautiful area, with very few hunters. During the five days I was out there I only saw two groups of atv/vehicle hunters on a single day, the second day of the season. Every other day and night I was completely alone. I also didn't hear a single other gunshot the entire time I was out there. Camp was at about 6500', max elevation reached by vehicle was 9500', and cow elk was shot at 7300' and about 250 yards from the reservation fence. This hunt was pretty much everything I love about Nevada big game hunting... except for the aches and pains which I hope will eventually fade sooner rather than later. My Cousins boy's hunt was a success. Filled his tag on day 2. He's also a taxidermist if you're needing any work done. I also smoked a coyote the day prior while calling. My farthest shot to date. 337yrds. I can barely see them that far, let alone hit them. Cousins boy spotted it and it and it put the smack down on it. 100% luck but I'll take it.

Another season has come and gone for me. I had 4 Wyoming private land whitetail doe tags that all got punched just to fill my freezer, but despite that, I feel the trip was a total bust because I also planned on spending a day shooting prairie dogs as well as visiting Little Big Horn National Park, both of which I didn't get to do because of the government shutdown and constant rain for the whole time I was there. From there, I went on my Nevada mule deer hunt. I didn't see any decent bucks the whole 5 days out there. On my 3rd evening I passed on a 4X2 because it was broken on the 4 side and I regretted it aftwards due to the lack of quality bucks. I spotted him again on the morning of day 5 and didn't think twice about taking him. In the end he turned out to be a pretty cool little buck. Tom    |

Got my bull elk in the 12th. Definitely was a tough hunt in 076, 077, 079 and 081. Talked to a biologist and lots of hunters that weren’t seeing anything either. Got up there and scouted 4 days prior to season and then hunted 7 days before I was successful. Got on a herd of elk 3 days into the season but couldn’t make it happen. Drove about 2200 miles total scouting and hunting, only to take it 15 miles from my dads front door  Spotted him from 2,476 yards out in a stand of PJ’s. Stalked to 260 yards from him, one shot and done. My dad was able to get the truck within about 250-300 yards after I got the bull down, so that made things a bit easier. Forgot how much work this was, Mel was with me and said she is going to stop applying for elk now Attached File Attached File |

I keep forgetting to post the conclusion to my '25 season. I finally drew a pretty good NV deer tag this year. Unfortunately, my Uncle Fred died earlier in the year. When I was a kid, he showed me his custom 300wm, and said it would be mine when he was gone. I had a great gunsmith go through it, thread the muzzle, cerakote, little laser work, and I added a new scope, Timney, arca, and loaded up some 182hhts at 3000fps. Before he passed, I was really hoping he would make it to deer season so he could see me get something with his rifle. On the day we found out he wasn't going to make it, I rushed down to the range and shot this final 5 shot 100yd confirmation group of the load I'd been working on. My mom was there with him, and she able to show it to him, and he was very happy. Attached File Come hunting season, the hunting pressure out there was insane, and it wasn't even to the more peak part of the rut. I came across a nice big forky and felt like my uncle would have mocked me for passing him, so one shot on a really extreme incline and he died in his bed. I was solo and it ended up being a good amount of work, but I'm super pleased. Attached File I did the Euro at home, my second try at one, and it came out great.
