Either date is fine with me as long as we're on the UPPER range! Tracers and 50 are a must!

I bought a fairly expensive "0 Degree" bag last year, but I've discovered that one man's "0" is another's 56 fahrenheit. I survived a few nights of frigid, but I wasn't comfortable at all. I'm just not built for it. Brian, on the other hand, was sleeping near my tent in his bermuda shorts on top of the blanket. He must be Irish with a smidge of Innuit. I'm a big cold-blooded sissy. If I use the heater and get the tent roasty I might make it. Depends on the severity of the temps. If it's in the 20/30 range, I'll brave it. Any colder than that, I'm getting hammered in a hotel room and watching nasty movies.

just cuddle up with Brian I'm sure he could keep you worm

I don't care either way, but sharing the range with the public sounds like a pain. (As much as I like to see the big boy stuff out to play) These shoots are (for me at least) 90 percent bs'ing with the gang.

Oh yeah, MERRY CHRISTMAS (or whatever the hell holiday you celebrate)!

I thought the indian guy at the gas station was going to punch me when I said "Marry Christmas". Instead he just half ass smiled and said "Yeah.".

Shareing a range is nothing really, knob creek sets it up so that you really dont have to deal with the public if you dont want. For the most part everyone leaves you alone, and use of the lower range is awsome too. The lower range will be private and offers a great place to out of public eye. Trust me the public at knob creek isnt that bad at all.

Mostly I like attending them. This all got started when I asked the Ohioans if they were having their Frozen Buckeye shoot since the range they had it at was closed this year.

They said they wanted to come here, so here we go again. The last shoot was organized by Stump, I just offered some advice.

FINALIZED PLAN:

Ok, we've arrived at a consensus (well, at least enough that we have to get off the pot and nail down a date).

February 3rd/4th, Knob Creek Range is the date and place. We'll be renting a car to blow up, no on the porta-potty, yes on the upper range, and we'll either camp out or hit the hotels depending on your intestinal fortitude, and likelihood of frostbite.

So, with that nailed down, let's all make our plans, arrange the convoy, figure out who's staying where, who's bringing the ball-gag and astroglide, and the fun little details.

Carry on!

OH HELL NO!  I have my own gear.

I could not help but curse unexlpainably every time I saw saw JME's set up.  His truck was the equivalent of the "sippy cups" of SUV's but his tent was a portable freakin' casino, hence why I took to calling him Casino.

Oh, and that's great on the whole propane launching thing coming up.  If Bob and I get drunk, we know how to spin that story into a major UFO event with Ninjas.  If we just shoot the car and keep all idiots under close watch we should be fine.  Since I am not an organizer, I will just give advice here, you should consider issuing large orange badges to all known or suspected idiots.

Hint on using a 20lb tank for the heater buddy, it has to be in the tent to work.  If it is outside the tent in cold temps, it will eventually freeze up and your heater will quit.  So a 20 works in a large tent but if space is an issue use 1lb bottles and keep a few spares in the tent as well.

You know, technically this could be called the 4th annual midwest frozen nuts shoot.  There has been a regional gathering in cold weather this time of year every year since February 04.

Question for KYBob, Looking at the shooting layout, it appears to me that you had a stagered shooting line? The guys under the Roof were shooting from the benchs but the guys left of the Roof were shooting even with the front poles? I'm not sure I'm liking that too much.

I will most likely make it down, have to try the 8mm Yugo thru the 1919 and have always wanted to shoot on the main line at the "Creek"

IIRC, during the KCR MG shoot it's staggered like that too, only the line (yellow tape under bob in the photo) is at a more severe angle away from the roof where the firing line during the big shoot is out a couple feet past the roof line. I looked at my pictures from '03 and it's laid out that way, staggered with Forge's MG's all about 20' out from the fence line on the left of the roof, aiming into the center of the range.

Unless the benches are set back in such a manner that a muzzle can be swept into the shooters on the left, it shouldn't be a problem but I can't tell from the pics if that's the case. Bob can probably tell us that, and if we need to adjust it I'm sure we can.

KCR MG shoot they shoot in front of the overhead cover, not under cover, line goes straight across.

Here is a pic showing the difference betweeen the benchs and makeshift line.

Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to stir up any shit, I just want to be made clear that I will not attend a shoot with what appears to be a stagered line, it's not safe in my eyes.

Scott, it is as safe as you help us make it. You don't want to shoot on a line like that, then help us FIX IT. Don't just start tossing out grenades about how it is not safe and you will never attend a shoot like that.

It is our tape, we can put it wherever we want.

This seems out of character for you, but I have only met you twice at Ohio shoots.

Bob

[#30]
Scott, if you look at the line during the MG shoot (like in your first photo), you see the grey tent roof staggered all the way in the background? That angle is also the angle of the firing line down there. When it gets to the corner of the roof, it turns about 20 degrees. The line is parallel to the fence line, only pushed out about 20' whereas the line in front of the roof is out about 15'. It's staggered just like in Bob's picture, perhaps at the same angle since the tape doesn't go to the fence but runs along it....even tho the roof firing line is out past the gravel.

It's staggered too, I shot from Forge's standpoint when I was there the first year, and all his guns aimed to the right, at the center of the range. If I turned one 45 degrees, I would have swept the entire main line.

Bob, like I said I'm not trying to shit on the shoot, but having two firing lines is not safe in my book, everyone should be on the same line, even if it bends slightly to compensate for terrain changes.

My fix is to have the guys from the benchs move up to the yellow posts on the front of the overhead canopy, but then they would be infront of the "public shooters" on the benchs to their right.

or

The caution tape should start on the same line as the benchs forward postion (looks like a joint in the concrete) and extend to the left the same distance off the fence as the benchs.

With the split firing lines (as shown in the pics) you are in essence "down range" when at the caution tape vs the guys on the bench.

Scott

[#32]
How about just make the first 10 feet from the concrete to be no man's shooting land, and then pick up extra line real estate after that.  That would give a slight buffer between the covered shooters and the angled line.  There's not a whole lot of area to set up on in that angled area anyway, but it does come in handy depending on how may benches KCR is willing to rope off for you.
12/27/2006 6:46:18 PM EDT
[#33]
We cannot move the line up past the benches. The RO, and I assume Kenny, will not allow it.

I drove out to KCR today to talk with Kenny and have a look at the physical calendar to make sure the right dates were marked and the details noted. We will be on the main range with a vehicle and tannerite is OK past 100 yards which is about where the vehicle will be, maybe a little further. He is marking off enough range for 25 to 30 of us. I told him I would inform him if it got larger or smaller than that and that if the turn out was light we would give up range to the right for other people to shoot.

Last time we filled it up and then some but as people left we took the tape down to allow new shooters on the line.

We will have the campground to ourselves (big surprise) and we can collect any fallen wood from the surrounding forest. I suggest anyone set on a big he-man fire should bring along some of your own as it will be cold and go fast.

I may have some pallet wood I can bring. If I can get my chainsaw running before then I will bring it. More chainsaws would be helpful.

$10.00 each day to shoot.
$10.00 each night per person to camp.

I think safety belongs to all of us and also why I like shoots at public ranges, when in doubt on an issue we have a tie breaker in the RO's.

What are the general layout and rules of the range in terms of targets?

It sounds like we will have a car, maybe out at 100 yards. What else wil have access to there or what can we bring in terms of targets and target stands etc?

Can we set up some targets/target stands at 7 to 25 yards for handgun?
Steelplates?
Plastic pop bottles filled with water?
Old PC cases etc.....

What, if anything should we start setting aside for this shoot.

The rules are no glass and no targets on the ground short of 25 yards for rifles as it is all concrete pad for much of the range. Other than that I am unaware of any other restrictions but if you carry it out you must bring it back. So keep in mind how messy it might be after riddled with holes.

Bob

You can easily set up something at 7yards or 335 yards. Old PC's are great and I am bringing a few. The vehicle will be 100+ yards away.
