I REALLY wish I could attend. My wife and I invited a couple to go with us to the gun show at the fairgrounds. We will be coming from Davenport. Part of the deal was if the "boys" drug the "girls" to the gun show, we had to take them to the Jordan Creek Mall and the Tanger outlet center. There just won't be time left in the day. PLEASE, update afterwards with tons of pics and opinions of parts. I'm curious to know more about the trigger groups. I don't own an AR, but am looking at building my own. |
i got that... i have a hornady single and a hornady progressive. i use all LNL (lock n' load) stuff now due to ease of use, so i can help a bit with it. guys like yammer know more about a lot of that stuff than myself. when it comes to precision loads i do pretty well, but the high volume stuff i'd leave to yammer, ozzy, and a few others. they do quite a bit more than myself. either way, they'll be some stuff lying around to talk about. i'm looking forward to it. |

Septic, have you set a time that this will start? I also have 2 others that want to come, just to watch and learn. Is there going to be any issues with this? planning on ordering my lowers soon but won't have them in time for the party. I am really interested in the "trigger trial" and have no problems with bringing some ammo, is umc ok? or should I bring some Q3131? Also will you be posting directions to the site or could you shoot me an E-mail. Thanks teggy1 |

You can change my vote to two people... got a friend very interested in AR's after he shot mine a couple weeks ago and he picked up a lower at the Adventureland show! We were also wondering what time this shindig was going to start. Ozzy, my buddy, and myself will likely be carpooling over for the festivities. |

Looks like this thing is becoming very popular! I hope Septic doesn't run out of room, and I also hope it's not -15 degrees out that day! I'm still planning on making it at this time, but a couple of things have changed since my last post. My parts arrived and I assembled them! Everything is great except I don't have the $5 wrench to tighten the nut fully on the CAR stock. My girlfriend is also trying to make plans for me that day. She's the one who did that last time I tried to get together with the hometown guys!

removed... the link above will get you there. removed... my shop is beside the house - you can't miss it. i'll have the garage door open, so come on in. coffee and such will be ready when folks show and my wife has offered to feed us soup and sandwiches towards noon. my range is beside my house also. it is modest, but it works fine... it is hilly, so wear proper shoes... email, IMs, or whatever work fine to contact me for my phone numbers, etc. just in case.... IF YOU DON"T HEAR FROM ME RIGHT AWAY, post here and i'll contact you. i want everyone who is interested to be able to attend. i'm looking forward to it. doug from cameralandny.com is sending me a vortex scope for you guys to fondle as well. i don't know much about them, but it is always nice to monkey with something free to the touch. i'll have an "evalution" sheet for each of you to jot down your impressions of each trigger/fire control group to quantify my own impressions as i'm posting my findings here on arfcom as well as other sights for the benefit of others. i'm looking forward to this, and i hope you are too! -michael |

Well, I informed the wifey and since other women will be there, she's now interested. So, I guess I'll add a +1 to my name. All I ask is that everyone not comment on the value of items installed on such guns. She has no idea what that lil eothingy or the crimson trace ar laser grip cost me. LOL I may be in a world of hurt after this fun filled event!  lol

Acer, what cal are you using? i'm building a 6.5G for such an occasion... Blackta6, make sure you hit the poll for my headcount. that goes for everyone. hit it only once please... looking forward to it! needknees, if you need some stuff, i can loan you something. let me know. i might be able to pick something up on the quick, but i'd need to know right away... |

Septic. The 6.5 was #1 on my list (ballistics and cheap Wolf ammo), however, the lack of a lower priced 6.5 upper drove me to the 6,8 SPC. That's what I'm currently using. The ballistics are about perfect for Iowa whitetails. My shots are usually off-hand within 100-150 yards, usually closer. Hell, my slug gun would work just fine, but for the off chance... I figured the 600+ yard efficiency of the 6.5G really wasn't going to help anything. Not to mention, the cost to only be used a few times per year. In the end, I'm going back to a .300 win mag bolt action gun for anything longer range. I might end up asking for help here in a few days. My current 5.56 upper has a CF FF tube on it, to be replaced with a YHM rifle-legnth FF rail. Essentially, I have no idea what I'm doing...haha |

We will have fun... |

wow thats a bit of stuff! I got my LPK in the mail today so I just need to see if there's a good lower at the gun show. I'm going to go get another hundred rounds or so of UMC or something tomorrow. I will probably bring about 300-400 rounds Got to hand it to RB precision. They got a LPK to me in one day! I ordered it at noon Yesterday and it got here today (USPS Priority) |
| I need to pick up a Magpul oversized trigger guard, some magazines, and 2 A2 buttstock kits tomorrow at the show. I would like to find a deal on about 100-200 rounds of UMC for party as well. Look for me and my girlfriend. I am 6'2, pale and goofy looking. My girlfriend is cute and the old-man vendors will be hitting on her like usual. |
Still nothing, I got an email back from the lower guy and it's on the way. Should be here tomorrow at the latest. How long does it usually take you to get orders from FTF Industries? I ordered that parts kit on the 15th, they charged my card on the 16th, and I still haven't seen anything. Got an order confirmation email but no tracking number / shipping notice :-/. ...I am still very much looking forward to Saturday to pick your brain about 6.5 he See you Saturday! deja vu... www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=359127 you can just about plan on not getting it in time... i'll help if i can. for that matter, you could probably pick up stuff from Ron at APEX easy enough. he generally has the goods. i'll help if i can. i'll needs ozzy's stuff. i have a couple of triggers to drop in yet and i'm out of lowers... can't wait...

get ahold of ron at APEX. he and i were working on something and i dropped the ball on it... of those folks at the show, he's the most likely to have what you need. there are a couple things the FTF kit doesn't have, just for reference... they are missing the safety selector, grip screw, and grip screw washer. otherwise all you need is a fire control group and grip. FYI |

*sigh* Guess what came in the mail today... that I found out about after getting home from the gun show to pick up a lpk. I suppose I should have checked before heading down there but I'd lost hope at this point. Grrr. Oh well, at least I have some spare parts now :) |

lol. thanks... i hope everyone digs it. i'm looking forward to it. i just finished the last lower... glad that is over. you wouldn't think putting together 8 lowers would be time consuming, but... sounds like we'll all be busy tomorrow. i have to get up early and do some organizing and cleaning, but i think i'm pretty much ready. last minute kind of stuff, i suppose. the longer i look at things, the more i'd like to change and reorganize, but at some point i'll have to stop and call it good. see you guys in the AM. |

I also want to thanks Mike for hosting a great, fun event. That was extremely generous for you to host this and feed us! Your wife's muffins were addicting and I appreciate the guy (armorer guy) who helped me assemble my lower. The only downside of the event was that time went to FAST! P.S. I was the tall dude with all the Armalite stuff. |
+1 It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot too. Nice place and nice people. I would have really liked to stick around for the range time but had to leave for other family plans. I still don't think I can match any faces to screen names. Maybe we should have worn name tags!  That was a great turnout with lots of people! I was the one in the heavy blue flannel shirt that only had to tighten the CAR buttstock castle nut because I built the rest of the carbine early.I'm interested in seeing / getting any pictures that were taken too. Thanks again for a great time! |
i'd have to go with the geiselle and both the JP units at this time. superior pieces IMO. however, the RRA NM, RRA Varmint, and Armalite NM offer a great product at a super price point. it all depends on the intended use. when i finish my T&E i'll link to it so everyone can read the impressions and results.
i'm working on it currently. just got back from the bday party i went to. i'm not sure what the deal is. it seems to be working fine now. i'm going to double check everything and run a few of each kind through it tomorrow to rule out ammo/primer issues which is what potentially could be the problem.
i honestly did think about that, but i didn't expect as many folks to shop up as did hit the thread poll. i was pleasantly surprised, but not as prepared as i should have been. next time we'll do just that!!! |

Great pics he The ones I remember (because I forgot my goddamn notebook to write everything down and get my thoughts about them, what am I forgetting? ) in my order of preference were: Geissele JP Precision modular (three way tie) Chip McCormik single with curved trigger Chip McCormik single with flat trigger Armalite NM .... Standard mil-spec trigger in a Superior lower with the takeup set screw adjusted correctly here The Timney was nice. There's just something I can't completely describe about it that I liked. It's break was nice and clean with little takeup. It was like a half two stage... or maybe I'm nuts. I just didn't like it as much as the Geissele, and I don't think it's worth the money over the RRA units. The RRA triggers were quite surprising, especially for their price. The NM was slightly heavier than the Varminter but it felt like it broke cleaner for some reason. It may have been the lower it was set up in, I have no idea. I'm probably going to go with one of the RRA triggers for my 6.5 to begin with, then save up for the Geissele if I think it's necessary and move the RRA to my 18" SPR. The CMC stuff was also nice, I really didn't care for the flat trigger one though. It just felt odd to me. Like septic mentioned I'm sure it'd be great and offer more control over a standard curved trigger if you got used to it though. Mil-spec is crap. Sorry, compared to the other stuff that was on the bench today it felt like a mushy, heavy, creepy pile of shit. Superior lowers have a set screw to remove some of the take up out of a standard mil spec trigger. It does help and makes a noticeable difference (not much of one, but it's there), but it's not worth the potential hazards of the screw working itself into the fire control group. I tried it when I first got my lower for the 18" (now the mostly built one) but removed it not too long after. The risks outweigh the benefits. |
