| AI says the .458 SOCOM is legal for deer hunting even though it's a tapered case, is this true? |

Yes so is any .350 or larger bore diameter to include 35 Whelen ( based on a 30-06 in .358 diameter) And African Dangerous Game calibers… 375 H&H 416 Rigby 470 Nitro Express .. And the more common choices : 350 Legend, 400 Legend , 450 Bushhampster, 45-70, 444 Marlin, 44 Mag. etc But heaven forbid if you get caught with a .243 or 308 |

Let the people shoot deer with calibers designed to take down fucking elephants but grandpa's 30-30 win that's too dangerous for normal hunters |

Yep noted …..it makes no sense not to be able to use a 30-30 or 243 or .308 etc Actually I’ve only killed deer with a musket or a bow in Iowa . I care about the precision placement of the first bullet. I’m sighting in a new EABCO encore 350 Legend barrel soon, ……. I picked what was legal and available not what I wanted. I would much rather had the .308 barrel …. |

The most ridiculous options I've been able to find that would be legal have been .416 Barrett and 12 gauge from hell(near .700 NE performance out of a 12 gauge). But no .30-30. ETA-.500" is the max legal bullet diameter. So being .510, no .50BMG, .500 Linebaugh or .50 Alaskan. |

Much of the reason for the reluctance to make changes for all rifles comes from the Iowa Bow-hunters Association. They have for decades fought any changes to allow for rifle cartridges so as to maintain their advantage when it comes to time hunt deer during the rut. They regularly claim that our trophy deer herd will be decimated if we allow regular rifles to be used. Those claims are BS, and everyone knows it. The original reason for shotgun slugs being the only legal way to gun hunt deer in Iowa was due to safety, as in less richoet danger. That has been firmly debunked. Read about it here. The reason for the .350-.500 rifles being legal dates back to an Iowa lawmaker who demanded the language "... .350-.500 caliber or straight walled pistol cartridges" when the last change was made several years ago. It's long past time that the Iowa legislature change the rules to evaluate reality. Iowa shoots more hunters than our surrounding states due to the multi-hunter deer drives vs our neighboring states hunters who mostly hunt from elevated stands and ground blinds. Time for gun season to include any centerfire cartridge greater than .223" |

I was looking at a fancy one this weekend at Scheels and the salesman was saying how at a demo day they were getting consistent hits on a 11x12"plate at 600yds. Modern slug guns are 200yd guns also |

Who remembers the frenzy of pissed off deer hunters flooding the comment period, three days before deer hunting, when the changes would have disallowed .45-70, .444 Marlin, .460 and .500S&W? I sure do. Sometimes utilizing those comment periods actually works. |

Modern slug guns are 200yd guns also I had to laugh last week when Walmart put out the new guns. One is a rifled Savage 12 gauge for $698. Gun shops can't seem to give away slug guns and they're stocking one for that kind of money, that still needs glass on top. It's a nice gun though. If someone had one on the range I'd probably ask if I could shoot it. |

They have always had high power hunting from what I understand and their herds are doing better then ever. With less people hunting for fun and for food, I'm not sure it would even matter if more deer were taken. The biggest threat to our deer herd is loss of habitat and EHD. |

I've always said the people you need to worry about are already out there, illegally deer hunting with whatever they want to use-so why should the legal hunters be punished? ETA-the .350" line came about when the minimum bullet diameter was .357", and .350 Legend came out. Bullet diameter is .355", But was announced as .357". DNR said it was legal, people bought guns. Then they realized the bullet diameter issue and changed the minimum to .350. |
