My initial foray into Colt 1911’s came when a friend showed me his 1995 Lightweight Commander in stainless which was something I didn’t know existed. It was a stainless slide on a silver colored aluminum alloy frame that was ‘nickel teflon’ It was an ‘XS’ variation and had that weird flat top slide. These were a limited run of ~500 or so I’ve been told. I grabbed one from a retailer in Arizona listed in Shotgun News. I had Don Williams do some work on it, small-parts related, but I never warmed up to that flat top slide. fast forward years later and I see the XSE version, normal slide, front cocking serrations, Novak sights, love at first sight! I have a .45acp version that remains stock except for grips, and for me, it’s everything I want/need, except I’m enjoying shooting 9mm more these days. I knew the .38 supers were introduced to the line at some point, and a 9mm version, but as soon as the 9’s were announced and started to be made, Colt killed the XSE’s. I’ve been keeping an eye out for a .38 or 9, and saw a few, but someone had ‘tweaked’ every one I’ve seen. Until now, I finally found an unmolested 9mm with the box. does anyone else still love these ? They used to be popular, but we’re going on 10 + years now since they’ve been made, and don’t seem to hold much allure. |
