I don’t understand Colt. First their King Cobra doesn’t look like a King Cobra of old. Then their target 22 is called a King Cobra but it looks like a Python. Now they switched to Bear names instead of snake names. What am I missing? |

Most of the other snake names have been used on other brands of firearms. There was a South African auto named Mamba, the Asp was a famous conversion of the S&W Model 39 auto, the Sidewinder was used for a rifle and a revolver, the Black Mamba was used for another foreign auto, Bushmaster was used by Remington and several others. Bottom line, Colt does what Colt wants. I've given up trying to figure their naming conventions of recent years. The new Cobra should have been named Detective Special. The King Cobra should have been Diamondback II. |

| Colt's naming convention has always been all over the board. The snake names are comparatively recent by Colt historical standards. They will also re-use names to confuse people. There are two completely different King Cobras, the old Viper and new Viper are kind of a like but not really. the Detective Special morphed into the SF-VI (I think that's what it was called), the Officer's Model could be a target revolver or a carry 1911, there are two distinct models of the Police Positive, again similar but not. |
