Got a problem I’d like to hear opinions from yall. . Springfield champion. Steel frame. Stripped out the frame for a grip bushing (threads in the frame were stripped). Gunsmith installed an oversized bushing and redlocktited it in. He said he retapped the frame. I reassembled it and CAREFULLY snugged up the grip screw. Believe me when I say I didn’t crank down on it. Ok today when I shot it I checked the screw tightness and the damn bushing acts like it’s stripped the frame again. It took minimal effort to spin the grip screw. Is there a double-oversized bushing? Am I looking at having the frame rewelded/brazed? Or ???? I’m assuming the GS just used locktite and didn’t stake the bushing. I’ve gathered these days staking seems to be out of favor for some reason. I’ll be talking to him asap (which will be Thursday) and would like to know what’s best practice. |

That’s why I have a poor opinion of SOME gun plumbers. You can try and have them fix it I suppose. You can also fix it yourself. One guy here did his. | I have ruined some bushings in my time but never had to go oversized. You kinda need to pull one and put the calipers to the outside threads to see if they are normal or oversized. I wish JMB had found a different way to attach grips, that is a pain to deal with. |

Well got with my now EX- gunsmith about my bushing issue. Told me that oversized bushing was all he could do. No ‘lemme see what I can do’ no refund, just basically go pound sand. So. I guess its back to doing my repairs myself. Picked up some epoxy at lowes. Jb weld. The 6020psi stuff. Highest strength they had and did a ‘repair’ myself. Cleaned down to bare steel and degreased/cleaned with 91proof alcohol and got her setting up now. If this don’t work I’ll likely give Springfield call and see if they can work any magic. Don’t know any gunsmiths in the area I’d trust after this. |

Must be related to one of my Ex GS lol. Back when springer glued the ejector in, mine came loose. I take it to him, he takes one look and says yep, needs a pin. I said do it. Freaking tard got sleeve retainer loctite and glued it back in, no pin. It didn’t hold. Good luck with the epoxy, it may work. |

JB (for all the jokes around here) is pretty decent stuff. Years ago I used it to fasten a slide lock spring housing to the frame of a 1911 instead of properly peening the legs. It’d already worked loose and I figured wth. (Competition gun not carry). Damned if it didn’t stay solid for well over a decade of regular use. I’ll give it a couple days to really setup (instructions say 24 hrs) and then see how it goes. I’m so tired of doing my own ‘smithing but it’s usually stuff I ‘can’ do. Just not setup for machining anything but that’s a very rare event. |
