Anyone aware of any recent changes to this stuff?  I’ve shot about 600 rounds of it through my Valor, no problems (other than a slide stop issue which has been fixed).  It won’t feed now.

I haven’t bought any since fall of last year until this week.  Took it home.  Loaded it up.  Won’t chamber.  Got it into battery then shot it ... FTRTB, over and over.

Luckily I have some old S&B HP’s so I tried that and no issues.

That's what I use for training because cheap.

I have several (1,000 rnd) cases circa mid-2017 and the dent I've made in it has all been OK.

Tried some last year. Found it to be yet another 'fake' 10mm  - i.e., a 40-level junk load.

True, it’s mild.  But it’s cheap and so I was able to shoot lots of it.

This; I mostly train with my G27/23/22s but when I want to train with my G20 and more importantly my Sig 220-10, I use "fake" 10mm.

Just shot 50 rounds of Sig 10mm 180gr FMJ through the Valor... no issues.

S&B either made changes to their ammo spec or I got a bad lot.  Somethings not right.

How much of it do you have/did you try? Interested in finding out what the deal is.

Lot # 64/85

I keep a logbook of everything I do with this pistol.  I had over 500 rounds of this S&B stuff through it with no issues.  All S&B 180gr ammo I bought between June and October of last year ran great.  Purchased this lot a few days ago, and most time I can’t even load the gun with it!

Like I said, i went and bought 100 rounds of Sig ammo and shot half of it with zero issues.

S&B changed something recently.  They had to.  It’s not the Valor.  Hell, the Valor still feeds the S&B HP’s I bought last year.

I guess Magtech owns S&B now.  I called them Friday and left a message.  Hopefully they’ll call me back Tuesday.

PS- just shot another 50 rounds of Sig - no malfunctions

Out of curiosity, what is the bullet profile?  Flat taper / no ogive?

When it binds, does it look like this?

Yes, and yes.  I thought that’s what bullet S&B was using when I bought all that ammo in 2018 that never gave me trouble. But maybe it was more round then with an ogive but it definitely had a flat nose.  I can’t remember.  Anyone have S&B 180 gr 10mm FMJ they purchased a year ago?

On the left is Sig 180gr, the middle is S&B 180gr and the right is recently purchased S&B 180gr FMJ that won’t feed.

Your bullet to the right would produce the same effect in all 10 of my 10mm 1911s, from Kimber to Wilson and Nighthawk.  The difference is the ogive, or more appropriately, lack thereof.

In a perfect world, the magazine holds the round at the perfect angle.  The slide starts sending it forward towards the chamber, and the extractor tension leverages the case rim to keep it from dipping.  Into the chamber it goes, and life is good.
But sometimes rounds are not perfectly shaped, case rims can vary in thickness, mag springs might not quite be up to snuff, and the stacking of many little tolerances can keep the round from going straight into the chamber.  So a healthy throat will catch the dipping bullet and guide it into the chamber.

The problem with a flat tapered bullet in a 10mm 1911 is that the bullet can have a lot of vertical play, particularly after it leaves the feedlips.  In the last two rounds in particular, the bullet can move quite substantially.  If it comes in low when it hits the throat or ramp, it can start to climb at a fairly steep angle.  The bullet hits the top of the barrel hood, and a bullet with a healthy ogive sort of 'rolls', or eases into the chamber.  On a flat tapered bullet, the flat may come in at an angle such that it is parallel to the chamber hood.  It can't roll, and more force applied to the slide simply drives it more firmly against the top of the barrel hood.  You get a three point bind between the top of the barrel hood, the throat or ramp, and the slide.  You can verify this by yourself by taking your barrel out, positioning a flat tapered round at a steep angle, and feeling for the bind.  That is what is going on in your gun, possibly any time, but most commonly within the last two rounds:

S&B and Privi both make rounds with flat tapers and others with ogives.  The one that's cheaper depends on the supplier at the time, I suppose, so you can't use the lowest price as a consistent indicator of one or the other.  Just really have to read the label.  You will find this same sort of swap between flat tapered Truncated Cone (TC) and more traditional JHP with Armscor and some of the other value providers as well.  Sig did it too, in their initial run of VCrown, which was somewhat ironic when they introduced a 10mm 1911 that wouldn't feed their own ammo.  In addition to this sort of bind, the broad meplat, or flat area at the tip of the bullet, on a truncated cone can cause another issue as well; nosediving.  That flat can be wide enough to catch just below the feedramp or throat, and the slide will drive it downwards.  Very annoying.

I have these pictures because this drove me crazy years ago, and a bunch of folks offered me some really well intentioned advice that had me swapping springs and assorted parts, buying a bunch of different magazines, and even contemplating the Dremel.  But it ended up just being the bullet profile and the stacking tolerances of adapting a long existing platform to the caliber.  If you don't end up trading these 10mm bullets back, I have found them to feed fine in my Glocks, Sig, and S&W.

@johnnyego

Thank you.  This is exactly what is happening.  S&B must have changed their bullet in this loading (and increased the price as well) within the past year or so.  Sucks for me because it was dirt cheap and I could shoot a lot.  However their HP load is not that much more expensive and if it’s the same I can use it instead when I want to shoot a lot for cheap.

Left to right.

Speer Gold Dot
Hornady Critical Duty
S&B from probably June 2018
Remington UMC (looks the flattest)

My Delta runs all 4 with no issues.

Maybe my supposed lack of chamber support helps out lol

I once tried S&B 9mm & was greatly disappointed in the lack of accuracy. I never bought another box.

Sounds like they've not changed, IMO.

Your 2018 S&B looks a little more rounded than my 2019 stuff.  Maybe I’m imagining things, idk.  Thank you for the pic!

What do y’all think?  I think they changed their bullet.  Am I wrong ?  Not much, though.  But enough to make a big difference in my gun.  The new stuff looks like all angles, no curves.  OAL looks shorter, too.

Is this true? If so, darn.

Tried S&B and it's Slow & Weak.

Sig's 10mm FMJ is noticeably snappier.

Was wondering about Magtech's 10mm FMJ, since it's comparable in price to S&B, but I can't find any chrono results of it anywhere. Anyone know if it's as weak as S&B.

Can you get us a photo of the barrel feed ramp?

Sometimes the manufacturer will leave a sharp transition between the ramp and chamber, and this tends to conspire with the truncated cone bullet to bind the cartridge and keep it from rolling over into the chamber.

There needs to be a generous bevel or radius there to ensure smooth rollover.

Ken, you seem knowledgeable & to know what you’re talking about

Not to derail the thread, but my Colt Delta has run everything I’ve put through it. No bulging of the casings but I’ve only ran:

Speer Gold Dot
Hornady Critical Duty
Sig V-Crown and FMJ
PMC
Rem UMC
and the aforementioned S&B, so nothing super hot.

What do you think of my case support from factory Colt barrel? Is it terrible?

I think the Colt unramped barrel is safe.  It may not be ideal, especially if you reload, since hot loads like Doubletap have been known to bulge the brass at the unsupported area and I wouldn't want to reload those.

I also think there's really no reason not to use a ramped barrel in 10mm, unless you're Colt and stuck in your ways.
