I took it out to shoot last weekend and decided I hadn't given it a really good detail clean in a long time. Years and thousands of rounds of gritty bulk .22 primer compound combined with waxy bullet lube makes for an abrasive gunk that grinds away at the chamber face over time. I decided to detail strip the bolt and clean it up, and I discovered the extractor plunger was broken in two. I ordered a new one and it arrived today. I also got a new extractor spring and it was about 50% longer than the old one, so it was probably due for a replacement anyway. Still, it fired and extracted/ejected just fine with the broken plunger and tired spring. No telling how many rounds it ate with this broken part inside. Anyhow it pays to do a detail strip every so often.    In the picture above you can see where the wax bullet lube infused with grit from spent priming compound gets smashed into a bolt face pattern on the chamber end of the barrel. Some light peening is starting to encroach into the extractor slot here, but it's still probably many thousands of rounds ahead before it starts to become a problem. Of all the guns in my collection, this one has had the most rounds through it by far. Nothing else even comes close. It's just such a fun, easy shooting gun that you can't help but enjoy running a few hundred rounds through it before packing everything else up and leaving the range. lol, I had the extractor break just like that too. Same gun. It just ran I suppose due to blowback , I figured it out during a cleaning session and the extractor groove was full of crud. Ruger was pretty good about replacing it and sent a new one. |

I was gifted the Mark 2 Target by a family friend. I haven't fired it yet because it had a terrible scope on it. I need a different mount so I can put a dot on it. Because it was gifted to me, I have no idea the round count, but I know it was cared for. My plan is to strip it down and give it a thorough once over, replacing anything that needs it. The Buckmark was a gift for my boys to learn on. But by the time they were ready to switch to learning a handgun, they were ready for 9mm. So it's a very low round count gun. I've got a dot for it, just need a mount. The Buckmark will probably get a TacSol threaded barrel and other doodads. Other than a good mount, the Mark 2 will stay stock.  |
