| I've got one of the original 22/45's. I'd like to put a rail on top, but this version doesn't have any threaded holes on the top of the receiver or barrel - just the dovetail for the rear sight, and the front sight is screwed in. I think the best option would be a short section of rail that would fit into the rear dovetail and just be held in place by that (maybe with a set screw or something). Anyone familiar with something like this? Interwebs search turns up options for the uppers that are drilled & tapped. |
I don't know what will happen, or if anything will happen. But if something does, I'd rather be the guy with a gun than the guy without one.

Weiland makes one that uses the rear dovetail to mount it. It does sit a tad high because of the way it mounts, but doesn't require you drill & tap any holes in the gun. It is pretty solid and worked well with an old 22/45 I had with a Tasco Propoint with a 30mm tube. I bet it would be even better with one of the newer micro optics. I've looked for this for years, but the only thing that works as you mentioned is a Burris 3/8 dovetail mount that attaches through an adjustable rear sight and clamps around the barrel. |

Thanks for the replies. ihon, that looks like a neat design but you're right, it does sit up awful high. Seems they could've made that block significantly lower; and I'm not looking for that much rail. Just enough to mount an optic. MRW, that one looks a bit too involved as well. Looking into it more, the best option might be to get an optic plate that mounts into the dovetail; there's a few that have a dovetail mount on them, or I could probably get a short section of rail and drill mount that on the plate. Might be a good Fall project. |

They're cheap lately, can be had with a factory rail, or can accept extremely low profile mounting plates which makes a big difference in size and distance from bore to optic centerline. Just grab a newer one. |
