A couple of questions for the Taurus PT92 experts, please.

A friend has a blued 92AF in pretty good shape that he's offering to sell to me. I looked at it yesterday and I'm leaning towards buying it as a shooter. However, it has the original two-position safety - not the three-position decocker. Would this be a deal breaker for you? FWIW, I frequently carry and shoot 1911s.

Am I in the right ballpark to be thinking $275 - $300, depending on condition upon stripping and ammo/holster that comes with it?

I think you are spot on with 300 or a bit less. Have owned several through the years and the last PT92 AFX was a solid pistol. In fact I prefer the frame safety to Beretta's 92 with the safety on the slide. Any extras you get with the gun would be a plus.

What are you going to use it for?  Works the same as your 1911 so what's the issue?

Price is right. Solid pistol. Mecgar mags are plentiful

I'll be using it for an excuse to finally add a 9mm to my collection of .22, .380, .38, .357 .45 (ACP, & LC),.454 , .223, and 300BLK handguns.  This will be my first metric pistol after 60 years of curmudgeonry.

I understand that it works very similarly to my 1911s.  I was mainly wondering if there are any reasons to stay away from this older model PT-92AF.

Seems like a good price.
I have one that is more or less a truck gun.
It's been reliable and accurate.
It's the only Taurus that I like.

The PT-92AF is a great pistol...in some ways better than the Beretta 92FS if you have a phobia of the slide-mounted safety.

But...its only similarity to a 1911 is that it is a pistol has a trigger that operates a hammer. A DA/SA pistol is fundamentally different in operation than an SA pistol.

The manual of arms is different, the carry strategy is different, the actual shot doctrine is different.  Not similar to a 1911, no.

There's no reason to "stay away" from it.

Years ago I acquired a PT-92AF at a time when I was testing 9mm pistols for reliability.  I'd buy a pistol and try it for a year with hot loads, weak loads, long overall length and short overall length that were all reloads and then several brands of factory 9mm ammo that were 115 grain bullets.  I was using a Browning P-35 as the comparison standard.  Bottom line is I wish I had kept that PT-92AF !  Accuracy was good, reliability was better than many more popular brands and models of the day including models made by large and famous American makers that used to be the Police preferred weapons of choice.

If you don't buy it or you decide it's not your cup of tea let me know.

I would have no hesitancy with that model handgun.

For not much more you can get a Rock Island imported Turk 92 that uses standard Beretta mags.

Just understand your buddy's Taurus has a proprietary magazine, even with the better safety position.

Thanks - I should have clarified that I was only talking about the "up - safe, down - fire" action of the safety and the lack of a decocker.

In good shape, 300 is a reasonable price

I prefer the 2 position safety vs the newer 3 position safety
I tend to run my Taurus 92s, beretta 84 and BHP cocked and locked

I like others prefer MecGar magazines

I am assuming this pistol has the colt style mag release
Vs the side release down towards the bottom

The only two issues over the years were a weak magazine
release spring and I broke an extractor

The mag spring was fixed under warranty and being in a hurry
A beretta extractor was put in by my local gunshop

Since you are already used to cocked and locked, it would be a decent choice for you.  Just know if you ever wanted to use it double action, you have to lower it manually (so be careful).

Some people do claim to carry the pt92 cocked and locked, condition 1. I personally wouldn't.
I've got one of the models with a decocker. It's at least 25 years old. Supposedly the older pt92s were very high quality guns, better than today and supposedly some say the pt92 was the best, or the only good gun Taurus ever made.
I personally don't like not having a decocker, I got a CZ75 that's like that. It's a bit sketchy lowering the hammer. Once you get the hammer lowered on your loaded chamber you just keep it loaded between range sessions, assuming it's your carry gun.

Break his arm off accepting the deal! Those were basically Berettas with a frame safety.

He has agreed to $275.  I'll pick it up in a week or two then will share pics.

Those Taurus pistols have a lot of parts commonality with the Berettas. So aside from spare parts, you can also upgrade the Taurus to the newer improved Beretta locking block, and potentially some of the other 92 upgrades you might want. You can even use Beretta barrels in them.

I have heard that you can replace the mag catch assembly on the Taurus with the one from Beretta, and use Beretta mags. I haven’t tried it yet, as I got a bunch of the Taurus mags right after I got mine(so it was a moot point). I have also seen guys modify Beretta mags to fit the Taurus.

Closed the deal yesterday.  He threw in a black Bianchi M12 holster and a box of FMJ ammo. I think I did pretty well for $275.

You did good, that's a earlier one, imo better quality than what they pumping out nowadays.  I have one that looks like a twin of yours, IIRC mine was made in 1985 when I called Taurus.

Great price, they are pretty cool in that you can carry them condition 1, and I've found that they generally have a better trigger than a stock Beretta 92.

If you are going to carry cocked and locked
I would suggest a good leather thumb break holster

As others have said, MecGar magazines are the favorite

And surplus M9 mags work with a bit of file work to enlarge the mag catch notch in the magazine body. They are abundant and cheap right now.

I will also say that I’ve had one for decades and it’s never given me a lick of trouble.

I have a old 2 position safety pt99 that I bought a pt92 slide for due to the weak sight of the 99. I also have a new railed pt92 with the decocker, I do prefer the the 92/99.

Also you can mod Beretta grips to fit ( for the old ones ), just need to trim the bottom front and clearance it for the safety, its what I did.

I think if you move over your older grips you can lock out the decocker.

Nope the screw hole on the left side is higher on the old one ( same place as Beretta ). It does not really bother my, its more of I wish it did not have a rail.

I guess I could mod a different grip and no include the sweep portion of the decocker, but again its mostly the rail.
