I'm fairly new to the P365. I bought a Gen 1 XL with a manual safety about a year ago. Since I've been training with the M17 and M18, I wanted to maintain the same manual of arms with the manual safety. I noticed that the P365XL safety operates differently from the M17/M18, USPc, and other pistols I've used with a manual safety, in that the P365 safety can only be activated when the striker is cocked / sear is engaged. Or at least that's how my XL functioned with the Gen 1 slide... I recently replaced the Gen 1 XL slide with a new SIG-LOC XL slide, and now the safety can be activated when the sear is disengaged, i.e. after pulling the trigger and releasing the striker. It's not completely consistent though, because every once in a while, I'll find that I can't activate the safety after pulling the trigger while dry firing. At first, it seemed like if I fully racked the slide and pulled the trigger, I could put the safety on, but if I pulled the slide back just enough to reset the striker, then pulled the trigger, I couldn't put the safety on. More dry firing shows that to only happen intermittently. I also found it a little alarming that if the sear is disengaged (by pulling the trigger), and the safety is on, I cannot pull the slide back. It's locked and won't move until I take the safety off. I discovered this on my first trip to the range with the new slide. With the last three magazines (10 rounds loaded in each) of the 200 rounds I shot that day, the slide started failing to lock back on the last round. That may have been due to my grip, although it didn't happen prior to those last three mags. When the slide failed to lock back, out of muscle memory, I would put the safety on, drop the magazine, and pull the slide back (after verifying the chamber was empty through the LCI hole). That's when I discovered that I couldn't pull the slide back with the safety on. After cleaning the pistol, I put the old Gen 1 slide back on and confirmed that it still works the same way - the manual safety can only be on when the sear is engaged. The new slide still operates as described above. I haven't opened them up to compare the striker assemblies to see if anything looks different inside yet, but undersides of the slides look identical. I'll contact SIG if this sounds like an issue with the new slide, but I wanted to check with all of you to see how the manual safety is supposed to function on the P365. - Should the safety work like it does with my Gen 1 slide, where it can only be activated with the sear engaged? Or should it work regardless of the position of the striker / sear? - Should the slide be locked in place when the sear is disengaged and the safety is on? Sounds like mine. All stock, XL. The safety is wonky when the striker is down. As long as it is cocked, it works fine. I gutted mine down to the fire control group and don’t see why it works like that, but I’m absolutely no gunsmith. It bothered me at first, but it just works when cocked, like it should. So I’m not messing with it. It is an easy gun to carry for sure, even with the 15 rd. I need to get a few more 15s, the 12 are a bit short in my hand. |

On the older models, the safety can be engaged if the gun is charged/cocked and even if it isn't. Supposedly, Sig redid the FCU to interact differently with the newer striker assembly, which was also changed by removing striker reset spring and redesign of the striker, so it will only engage when charged/cocked. Sig does a lot of weird things and changes to firearms over the years and this is just on of those things unfortunately. |
