I don’t normally open carry but occasionally when going out to hike,etc I’d like to just carry openly to and from. Anyone using an OWB for open with no other retention than friction? Main thing I can think of is stopping a grab in public. Less so dumping the gun in the field in heavy brush or a fall. |

( Sig, S&W…) It works really well. The Rapid Force locking belt slide goes over the belt snaps shut has two release buttons that allow the holster to be removed. The holster locks on the ejection port and thumb release is fast for the operator. |

| I have two leather OWB holsters I use for hiking, with the old-fashioned strap.....I have two ALS holsters as well for range/battle belt setups, they just seem bulky, I wish there was a super slick kydex OWB holster with a thumb break or something similar for retention....for when I fall on my ass hiking, or the gun grip gets snagged with a tree branch. |

I want to say I’ve seen one but can’t recall. I bet JM could set one up like that. I just figured retention other than friction would be necessary since it’s carried out in the open. I stood in line behind a guy at a check out who carried in an open top holster. Vulnerable. I would expect more vigilance anyway open carrying but figure you’d want more security doing it. |

I OWB carry in a safariland when I'm hunting and it has ALS. Both to secure the gun against falling out, and to give a little protection against a grab. I also run it at competitions. I find the thumb release draw stroke pretty intuitive. |

DoubleClick Holsters has their SafeCarry Ranger. Cytac has their MegaFit and several other models with push button Level 2 retention. The SafeCarry Ranger has no moving parts. Uses a piece of rolled kydex that covers part of the rear of the slide. Slide the piece aside with your thumb as you go to grip and draw.  |

A decade of open carry from park to groceries. No retention aside from friction. I have run drills where someone tries to get the gun from behind me but couldnt because of the forward cant. You mention hiking, I have high quality holsters that ride far enough away from the body that they are very fast to draw from, but very annoying to me in a hiking type situation because in my normal stride my arm clips the gun every step. It's just as annoying to hike around with my arm out away from my body to avoid it. Tight to the torso holsters for me are much better for extended walking. I require no retention but as others have said it's not needed with a quality leather holster. I do on occasion install simple rawhide hammer loops (for revolvers) that can be either off or on depending on activity. I've also got some old/high quality semiauto holsters with the old school thumb break if I had a concern All ride close in. |

I prefer retention for open carrying, which I usually only do when doing yard work or hiking. I want it for keeping the gun in place if I fall or get into a weird position (like trying to reach under shelves or crawl under a car) more than for protection against grabs. My current go-to retention holsters both have Safariland's excellent ALS system, which is my favorite retention mechanism. The others I've tried in the past (thumb-drive, Serpa, Alien Gear's duty holster, the spring-loaded hood thing a lot of custom level 2 holsters like G-Code use, and classic thumb-break) are all noticeably worse in one way or another than the ALS. The Safariland Solis is my current favorite, for my a P365XL with red dot and TLR7, and uses the ALS locking system. It rides close to the body with both belt and paddle, and carries very nicely. I can't imagine using any other OWB holster over it, unless the Solis didn't fit the gun I wanted to carry. |

I grew up on a ranch and open carrying a pistol in a OWB holster normally involved a hammer loop. Conceal carrying for the last 39 years, I've primarily conceal carried, usually with a IWB holster but sometimes with an OWB holster. If I am somewhere I need to seriously worry about someone grabbing it, I just wear a shirt over the top. Realistically, even if it's exposed, its extremely difficult for someone behind you to grab your gun in a holster with an FBI cant angle. They need to grab, push and lift it out and then pull it to the rear, and that's just not what they do. The problem with nearly all retention holsters are they are intended for duty use and as such are bulky. Concealment goes right out the window, and they are also quite rigid and falling on one can cause you some significant issues out in the wild. The juice just isn't worth squeeze. |

If I'm puttering on the property is fine but if I'll be around significant numbers of people it is ALS. Bigger_Hammer

This::: I've got an ALS and I can't do the Mozambique drill in less than 2.5 seconds with it. It is very secure though being tight fitting with the lock pivoting into the ejection port. The much maligned Serpa is fast and rides tight, although most regular people can't use it safely. I'm a bit biased because my FN502 fits the XD Serpa holster. |
