I bought this thing on kind of a whim. It seems like a rock solid weapon light. Probably an upgrade to my current Inforce APL GEN3. That said a lot of guys on here go for the high end. What am I missing? Why is this not good enough for training and home defense or is it better for some reason? I chose it because it had a lot of flood. It had a rechargeable battery and the weight was pretty good compared to the rest of them. |

You can direct a beam to get flood if you want but you can't make a flood light overcome intermediate lighting or backlighting. Flood is also much less effective on someone else's eyes. Rechargeable batteries are lame if you use the light for anything like training or classes because dead is dead. I can drop batteries in my Turbo and off we go. That being said I don't expect many Olight users will take a class so that's probably a moot point. I'm absolutely certain my Surefire will come on when I push the mechanical switch. I can't say the same for the electronic switch Olights. I'm not a big fan of electronic switches in general and doubly so with a built-in battery. You do you though. Most people buy WMLs and then just attach them and leave them sitting, it could self-discharge and be dead and it'll be just as effective. |

You make some good points. If I’m taking a 4 hr class, I would need 2 lights to meet the charge/discharge alignment. That said, spill from a long throw surefire is not really flood. It is basically a misalignment of spec and reality! Whatever, Gucci gear folks love to talk about their Gucci. I do hope you actually train and shoot realistic scenarios. In reality, 30 min of light is kind of max needed, for SD. If you want to look through the swamps for hours chasing criminals and finally get convicted of murder, you do you. Seriously appreciate your feedback. You brought a key point out I overlooked because I’m not today night training over about 30 min or so. |

Why, you sound like you have some data… I have bought a lot of flashlights (handheld and WML) over the years and I have had more than one instance and brand where the light appeared dead but loosening and tightening the bezel, thereby resetting the light, fixed it. The battery showed charged when I checked it. I have not had this issue with mechanical switched lights, even the Fenix PD40R 3.0 (mechanical rotary) in my pocket now. If the battery is built-in there's nothing to do to disconnect the battery. It absolutely COULD have been a connection issue. Also, I can't say for certain that its tiny logic circuit got hung up or stuck but I have not had this particular failure happen with a mechanical switch so my preference lies there. My current lights are the PD40R, Surefire EDC2-DFT Turbo, and Surefire X300 Turbo. I wish the EDC used the older gas pedal switching or single mode mechanical but it seems to be working fine so far. As far as WML flood/spill goes I'm more than happy bouncing it off a floor or ceiling if indoors, the only time it is a little harder is at night outside but in that scenario I've already decided to go from handheld to WML so spill is moot for me. I prefer the added capability of an intense hotspot and especially after putting targets up with a large light between us or doing a night shoot with flashlights taped to the targets pointed back at us. Even a cheap flashlight does a lot against the 5,000-10,000 candela range weapon lights. All this is just my opinion and I don't even have a YouTube channel so make your own decisions. |
