Twins!!! I've got several SAA's, this is my first New Frontier. I wanted something different than my Rugers and being a 44 Special fan this one fit right in. |

I got my old model Vaquero .44 mag a few weeks ago. The buffalo horn grips finally came in yesterday. While I was waiting, I made my very first Mexican Loop holster and gun belt. 18 cartridge loops, a little tooling and a little stippling......this was my first attempt, and now that I have a clearer picture of what I'm doing, the next one will be better. ETA: It's a far cry from perfect, and there's a few things I wish I had done better/differently.....but the belt/holster was a big piece of hide just a week ago. I even made the black dye--a piece of steel wool dissolved in vinegar makes 'vinegaroon' and a quick dip is all it takes. (Don't even need to wear gloves because it reacts with the tanning chemicals and doesn't stain everything it touches--Youtube is FULL of great ideas!) Attached File Attached File |

So, I've been playing with my rig and making some changes...added a nice buffalo horn bowie knife....moved the holster around...tried normal strong side quick draw, made a crossdraw holster.....and no matter what I do, it's not balanced. To remedy this, I bought a matching stainless old model Ruger Vaquero in .44 mag and set it up with the same buffalo horn grips Attached File |

Unfortunately, with only 2 boxes of 45 colt on hand and being scare right now, I'll probably only shoot a couple cylinders worth. |

You (and anyone else who shoots 45 LC, 44 mag/spcl) really need to look into reloading. I just about choked when I went looking for ammo for my recently acquired matching 44 Vaqueros, so other than a box of Hornady Leverlution, my revolvers have only seen handloads. With virgin brass, Magnus 240gr lead SWC and neckbeard primer pricing, I was loading my 44Spcs for about $0.65/shot. My 44 mags in virgin brass were about $0.80/shot--but only because I prefer XTPs in my hunting loads. I could use hard cast or cheaper JHPs and save 10-20 cents. As I accumulated brass, that expense went away and my cost dropped to about $0.35/shot for Spc and $0.50/shot for mags. That makes my .44s as cheap to shoot as my 9mms (I don't reload 9mm) and they're getting more use than any guns I own other than precision .22s now. |

I have most of the stuff I need to reload and had been considering setting it back up, but everyone's been complaining about the scarcity of components, so I kind of wrote it off. Being able to shoot that pig more often would certainly make me happy though |

Components are harder to come by, but they're out there if you look. I got 200 44 Spc brass, 200 44 mag brass, and 1200 240gr lead SWC from Midsouth Shooters Supply just a month ago. AA#5 shows up every now and again for about $35/pound. H110 for the magnums seems to be fairly available for around $38/pound. The hardest thing to find right now are the primers, but if you look--and pounce immediately--you can find 'em for about $70/K. I posted this pic before, but I spent about 2 hours with these over the weekend--close to 200 specials and 100 mags--definitely couldn't have afforded that with factory ammo Attached File |
