Twins!!!

I've got several SAA's, this is my first New Frontier. I wanted something different than my Rugers and being a 44 Special fan this one fit right in.

Same here…I have several Ruger single actions (A couple in .44 special), but when I retired, I felt that I deserved a genuine Colt!

I got my old model Vaquero .44 mag a few weeks ago.  The buffalo horn grips finally came in yesterday.

While I was waiting, I made my very first Mexican Loop holster and gun belt.  18 cartridge loops, a little tooling and a little stippling......this was my first attempt, and now that I have a clearer picture of what I'm doing, the next one will be better.

ETA:  It's a far cry from perfect, and there's a few things I wish I had done better/differently.....but the belt/holster was a big piece of hide just a week ago.  I even made the black dye--a piece of steel wool dissolved in vinegar makes 'vinegaroon' and a quick dip is all it takes.  (Don't even need to wear gloves because it reacts with the tanning chemicals and doesn't stain everything it touches--Youtube is FULL of great ideas!)

A .45 Colt NM Blackhawk beater I picked up from a local forum.  Grips are by Chig's and I bought the .45 ACP cylinder on another forum.

Thank you!  I had fun making it and I'm already laying out patterns for the Mk 2 version. (to correct mistakes that I can't un-do)

Its hard to find a nice left hand rig without going the custom route, paying $$$, and/or waiting months so I figured I'd just give it a shot myself.

I need a recommendation for someone in the Central TX area who can work on a SAA clone for me, specifically a U.S. Arms Abilene.
Link Posted: 3/15/2022 6:51:46 AM EST
[Last Edit: FighterFixer1] [#13]

So, I've been playing with my rig and making some changes...added a nice buffalo horn bowie knife....moved the holster around...tried normal strong side quick draw, made a crossdraw holster.....and no matter what I do, it's not balanced.

To remedy this, I bought a matching stainless old model Ruger Vaquero in .44 mag and set it up with the same buffalo horn grips

I've never been into cap and ball revolvers but I would change that immediately for one of those stainless Ruger Old Army's.  I've lusted after one for decades but I always just missed out on the ones I tried to buy.  Nowadays they are too far out of my budget.  I wish Ruger would start making them again.

Same here, not a blackpowder guy (yet) and this is my first one. I've wanted a fixed sight 5.5" for years. I just love the proportions of it. Finally bit the bullet...I mean roundball...and paid the gunbroker price. Luckily midway had the conversion cylinders on sale and hope to try it out this weekend. Unfortunately, with only 2 boxes of 45 colt on hand and being scare right now, I'll probably only shoot a couple cylinders worth.

It looks kind of like it, but it's supposed to be maple burl. I love that gun, but my wallet can't tolerate me shooting it much. 50cpr for 5.56 is stupid. Like $2 a round for .44s. Umm... No. I'll shoot a cylinder or two now and then, but I'm not buying cases of that shit.

@Stowe  Those grips are beautiful!

You (and anyone else who shoots 45 LC, 44 mag/spcl) really need to look into reloading.  I just about choked when I went looking for ammo for my recently acquired matching 44 Vaqueros, so other than a box of Hornady Leverlution, my revolvers have only seen handloads.

With virgin brass, Magnus 240gr lead SWC and neckbeard primer pricing, I was loading my 44Spcs for about $0.65/shot. My 44 mags in virgin brass were about $0.80/shot--but only because I prefer XTPs in my hunting loads.  I could use hard cast or cheaper JHPs and save 10-20 cents.

As I accumulated brass, that expense went away and my cost dropped to about $0.35/shot for Spc and $0.50/shot for mags.

That makes my .44s as cheap to shoot as my 9mms (I don't reload 9mm) and they're getting more use than any guns I own other than precision .22s now.

Thank you and that is a very valid point. I have most of the stuff I need to reload and had been considering setting it back up, but everyone's been complaining about the scarcity of components, so I kind of wrote it off. Being able to shoot that pig more often would certainly make me happy though

Components are harder to come by, but they're out there if you look.  I got 200 44 Spc brass, 200 44 mag brass, and 1200 240gr lead SWC from Midsouth Shooters Supply just a month ago.  AA#5 shows up every now and again for about $35/pound.  H110 for the magnums seems to be fairly available for around $38/pound.

The hardest thing to find right now are the primers, but if you look--and pounce immediately--you can find 'em for about $70/K.

I posted this pic before, but I spent about 2 hours with these over the weekend--close to 200 specials and 100 mags--definitely couldn't have afforded that with factory ammo
