Was at my local store yesterday to hopefully pick up the lower that got delivered Saturday. They hadn’t processed it yet, so I picked up some other things and was ready to head out when I finally noticed they got rid of the glass cases they were using for pistols and had moved to having them tethered to wall mounts. Decided to look around and fondle a few things. They had a Gen5 G19 with an ACRO and a Gen6 G17 COA on the wall.

Messed with the G19 first: after having messed with both, the ACRO is -huge-compared to the COA. I’ve messed with the 19-sized Dagger I have at home and the actual G19 felt much better in the hand. The Dagger feels like it’s just a little short in the grip but the G19 felt like it was just big enough that my whole hand could grip it.

Then I picked up the Gen6 G17; immediately, the grip texture and shaping done on the grip felt amazing compared to the Gen5 grip. Gen5 is decent, but can feel slippery. The Gen6 is aggressive enough that yes, it can be a little uncomfortable, but not enough to be bothersome and feels like it gives you a much better grip on the gun. It also feels much nicer in the hand. The COA is much smaller, but I’ve run an RMR on my G45 since I bought it, so it’s same-same to me. Ended up leaving the store with it. Probably overpaid some, it wasn’t Blue Label, but I’ve been wanting a COA since it came out. Plus I’ve been putting off changing the battery on my RMR since it’s a PITA, so having something that’s both enclosed and doesn’t need to be removed to change the battery is awesome.

When I got home, I pulled out my Gen5 G45 and started comparing the two. I can definitely understand why the grip feels better/different. My G45 grip is essentially a block, the palm swell and the molding they did on the Gen6 allows my hand to better mold to the grip. The texturing added at the front of the frame is also nice too. My TLR-1 has a gas pedal on it, and on the G45 I never noticed if I was actually engaging it with my grip; the texturing on the Gen6 gives me a very positive feel that my thumb is in the right spot. Granted, that’s nothing you couldn’t do with any Glock if you stipple it, use grip tape, etc., but having it like that out of the box is nice.

The trigger is ok. I can’t wait for the GPT to get reved to Gen6. It’s not a bad trigger, just a lot of creep/take up when you hit the wall. Dry firing, it’s not anything that can’t be dealt with, so I’m okay with it for the time being. The more angular trigger shoe is also nice.

Overall, happy to have it and can’t wait to shoot it tonight.

I put in a Tactical Trigger enhanced minus connector into my G19.6 and it was a game changer for me. Only internal thing I did and consider it good to go. It feels like how I would imagine a Glock should feel out of the box connector wise.

Nice! Upgraded recently as well after shooting a buddy’s 17COA. While the COA is nice, the deal I got on a 45 MOS was hard to pass up. I really love the grip and I think once I snag a magwell it will be perfect.

Looking forward to shooting it hopefully Wednesday

Executed fine tonight with a rough zero. I need to do a class or something to get a heavier round count on the pistol to really feel it out. Initial impressions are good, only thing I miss is the GPT. Might throw a higher slide release on as I ran into the issue of riding it 1-2 times during zeroing. But during both stages of fire, ran flawlessly, just need to learn the gun more with some more rounds. Don’t think I’m going to bother with any sort of comp with this one. Ran fine with ball and frange, the rest is just me.

Had Gen 5 COA.  Sold to go to Gen 6 COA

Very glad I did.

Can confirm the “block” grip of Gen 5 compared to Gen 6.

I did add some grip tape to my Gen 6 to help deal with sweat and it is a very nice addition so far.  Howies Hockey tape

Love this pistol.

Yeah, can’t disagree with you on that. I guess you can argue that no ergos means it fits everyone somewhat but nobody perfect. I ran one of the Kiral Defense backstrap things on my G45.5 and it made it point more naturally. I know there’s arguments that you just need to learn how to interact with the grip, but it worked for me.

I really like a lot of things about the gen 6 except one. The trigger reach feels too short to me compared to the gen 5.  I would have to run a backstrap and those backstraps just seem like a likely failure point to me.

I'm curious as to how the back strap could fail.

I worry sometimes about the pin working it's way out, but it's still in place.

Maybe use a removable adhesive if you're really worried about the backstrap coming off.

I was dangerously close to buying an Echelon when Glock announced the Gen 6.  I was able to check out a 45.6, and knew immediately I was going to buy a G17.6.  I lucked into a COA, and am planning on buying another, and probably a 19.

They are very thin plastic with pretty weak looking tabs holding them on at the heel and a plastic pin at the top.  Nothing about the system seems particularly robust.

Can't say I've ever seen one fail, or come off. Even the ones I use stay in place and I chop mine in half just for the beaver tail. There just isn't that much stress put on the pin or the strap itself.

Ok, let’s say the back strap falls right off in the middle of your gunfight. What happens then?

Nothing.  The gun still fires.   Why was your hand off the gun for it to fall off?

Your mag will fall out and your slide will fall off the gun and your enemy will laugh at you as he executes you.
Like wtf do you think will happen? A backstrap isnt required to operate the gun?

Lots of what ifs…
I’m the opposite.  To deep in the Gen 5 ecosystem.  No trigger or threaded barrel yet for Gen 6.  Like the new grip, but trigger reach is an issue for me.  I toss the bottom half of the beaver tail back strap on Gen 5.  Can’t do that with Gen 6 since it already has a beaver tail but the I don’t need the backstraps.

The lack of GPT held me back, but since the GEN5 COAs pretty much disappeared, and it felt so good, I impulse bought it. If I could get the exact same frame for my G45.5, it’d be perfect.

As for the back strap pin discussion, that pin isn’t taking any punishment during operation. Unless it’s been damaged putting it in or taking it out, there’s no way it’s just going to shatter while you’re firing. I’ve never seen it walking out, that’d be the most likely problem. I’m sure you could use a steel split pin if it’s a concern. Even if it somehow walked out (which is impossible since your hand is covering both ends of the hole), you’re still gripping the pistol so it isn’t going to fall off. Maybe move around some, but I’m pretty sure it’s fitted enough it’s not going to.

But, like I said, your hand is covering both ends of the pin, so if it somehow walks out you’ve probably got other problems going on.

Try the tactical triggers setup.  The enhanced connector feels better than the GPT.

Very nice, OP!

I've been going back and forth on getting back into a G19 recently. Picked up a Gen 6 in the LGS and instantly fell in love. Can't beat the COA blue label. This thing handles and shoots like a dream. Absolutely love the trigger, grip, and optic. First time I've gotten a Glock and felt like I don't need to do a thing to it but shoot it. Have a G Code Phenom Commando holster coming to make it my edc.

That was my exact experience too. Picked it up, felt the differences in the new frame, and it was sold at that point. My G45.5 is still my carry gun, but I don’t have to worry about taking lights on and off or cleaning it so much. It’ll get shot still, but nowhere near as much.
