I am looking for something to put on a G17 for home defense. It will never see a holster so the bigger the window the better as long as it is high quality. |

| the biggest Holosun or RMR Competion (SRO?) would be good depending on budget. The window sizes are small on paper but the comp versions are freaking huge compared to the 407k I carry and 507C on my HD stuff. |

Is it MOS? Cut for a particular footprint? I vote Holosun 507COMP in green, or Vortex Defender XL in 5moa or 8moa. RMR - Holosun 507COMP, trijicon SRO, Gideon Omega (budget SRO copy at $130). DPP - Vortex Defender XL ($250 at Scheels a few days ago for the 5moa), comes with MOS plate. RMSc - Gideon Judge XL 28x22.5 Link The Gideon Omega (SRO copy) has been out for well over a year and is used by many with not many reports of bad ones. It's good if you want a SRO style, but with choices of red, green 3moa dot or red or green circle dot. |

I like my holosun 509. It has a proprietary but very secure mounting system similar to the acro. Only downside is you will need a conversion plate or get a slide custom cut. I got a slide cut for it. I have it on my carry pistol and it has eaten a lot of door frame bumps without issue. |

The 509T is definitely the most rugged optic listed, but not the biggest window (what OP is looking for). |

Every Single Time BS will test any piece of shit optic. Doesn't mean it'll last. He actually shoots it, unlike Mr ozempic who drops them and beats them on shit. Remember what Ben put on his M&P at first? That sure as hell didn't last. And I have no idea who the fuck those other two people are. But I'm happy and/or sad for them. |

It was no different when I was recommending Holosun products back in 2015, and I encountered people just like you every time I did so. Max Leograndis and Justine Williams are the top USPSA PCC shooters in the country. |

Disclaimer: I don't have a lot of them, so my comparisons are slim. I have a Romeo 1 (yeah, I'm a dumbass It was my first one, and I didn't know any better) that has a big window and a nice clear view. It's 30mm IIRC. I'm considering getting the pro version, which is more versatile. I also have an Osight with a big window, but I'm not ready to recommend those yet. It's worked fine so far, but It does have a bit of distortion at the edge. It's not where you'd look to shoot, and it doesn't affect function. It just means I'm not super confident about the design. |
The hardest thing to explain is the glaringly evident which everybody has decided not to see.

FWIW, dont forget that Osight is going out and actively sponsoring folks. I was squadded with a Team Osight shooting team member at Area 4 (Yes, they are listed on Osights shooting team page on their website). The shooter mentioned that Osight pays them an amount over $500 but less than $1000 for each win (I know the amount they said, but I dont know if thats supposed to be public). I didnt ask them to elaborate if it was overall, division, or class win that counts. And yes, I placed quite a bit higher overall than said shooter while I shoot a much less advantageous division. I played around with the Osight C. I dont need an optic but just wanted to check it out it had quite a bit of distortion. I’ll stick with my Vortex Compdot for sure. |

I remember, 12 or 13 years ago when I bought my two Trijicon RMRs why I bought the models I bought. A lot of people were having issues with the battery powered units cutting off during use. The "fix", if I remember, was to put a piece of tape in there to force a tighter fit? That's why I bought the dual illuminated models. One in green, one in amber. They worked great for years. Meanwhile Trijicon figured out how to make their battery power units work and put the fix into them. Holoson started putting out models to compete with Trijicon and I wasn't interested. Then the tritium failed in my two units and I couldn't see the dots in low light conditions any longer. I contacted Trijicon, they had me mail mine back to them and told me they'd take a look and let me know what it would cost to fix them. Sounded great. I waited for the email letting me know the cost of repairs and suddenly got an shipping notice to let me know they were on the way. I assumed they'd decided to fix them for free. I got them back, excited to get them bak on my CZ P07 and P09. Grabbed one from the factory container, held it up with my hand over the fiber optic and had not dot in the lens. What? Carried it into the bedroom closet and held it up and still had no dot. Fine in the daylight (just like before it went back for repairs) but worthless in low light/no light. Grabbed the letter in the box and read it. The Trijicon techs. wrote there was nothing wrong with the two sights. I got on the computer and ordered two Holosons. When they came in they went on my two CZs and have worked great the last 3 or 4 years with zero problems. Every company has their issues, with their products and their customer service. Some day I may find out if Holoson problems cause me issues. I already know Trijicon has caused me problems. |

I have the holosun 507comp on a competition gun and its a great optic. I will comment on the suggestion for the gideon Omega: It is not something I would recommend for one main reason, it is not very bright. I bought the green one in the hopes that it would be more visible than the red. Nope. If the holosun goes to 10, the gideon goes to about 5. barely visible on a bright day. the circle dot reticle is also a fat, chunky reticle that looks to be the same as the airsoft grade optic I bought to put on an airsoft gun. It looks nice and has held up to centerfire handgun recoil thus far(only 200 rds or so so far) I bought an Osight SE recently to check out. It is not much more than the Gideon optic but the emitter is on par with the holosun optics, which is to say its good, very bright and not a fat chunky mess like the gideon. haven't shot it yet but If I want an optic that is more budget than the holosun, I would go osight at this point. From reviews, the early ones had some issues but they seem better now. I feel like the optics are in a different class than the weapon lights IMO. the Osight C is supposed to be one of the newer models that and has a decently sized window, but isn't that rechargeable crap they put out initially. its also open emitter. I would also seriously consider one of holosun's SCS sights, either the original SCS that mounts directly to the MOS system , or preferably the SCS Carry closed emitter version. The auto adjustment system from reviews is supposed to be nearly as good as the RMR HD system. Important for a defensive use RDS IMO. If Trijicon made a closed emitter dot with the RMR HD auto adjust system, I'd scrape together the money. personally I'm either going with the SCS Carry for my next dot, or hoping for an EPS carry to come out with the auto adjust system of the SCS sights. But if you have the budget for it, in your situation, the RMR HD would be a no compromise optic. It's just too big for my intended use as a carry optic. |

My red Gideon Omega and Holosun EPS are noticeably brighter than my green Holosun EPS Carry. However, the Gideon is a terrible home defense red dot. The auto shutoff will fully power down the dot after a few hours. The shake awake only works up until that point, so you’ll have to press the button to turn on your dot and there’s no way to disable it. |

For Home Defense definitely go with Trijicon or Holosun. I hear the SRO has had some issues though. Trijicon HD should be g2g I like my Vortex/O Sights but I don't fully trust them just yet. They are too new The Osights are just on range guns for the sake of having an optic. Not saying they don't have potential, but the jury is still out imo. Seems like the best cheap option for a plinker or parts bin gun. The closest thing I have done to torture testing was throwing one on a shockwave and blasting away with slugs every week. Vortex I trust a bit more, the quality is looking far better than their last generation. It took a ton of testing for Holosun to be reputable. Some of them have gone 20k+ rounds, bashed, slammed, etc. The cheapest/fastest way to test an optic without spending money on ammo: Click To View Spoiler |

Well I bought mine off ebay so maybe I got a QC rejected sight from omega? It came packaged just like the real one. It's amazing to me what the chinese will copy. Are they copying each other or maybe just undercutting the US company by selling the product they are making on contract for omega themselves? At any rate, the Osight has been good so far. That will be my new budget go to optic until one fails me. |
| In addition to window size, another big factor to consider is the auto adjust feature. For this HD application, you may be in a pitch black situation without a WML on, or you may have an X300T pointed at someone in a white shirt. The Trijicon HD is best-in-class, by far, for this scenario. In other words, having a forward facing auto brightness sensor is very nice on a serious use MRDS |

Is your G17 a factory MOS cut? One answer is the Athena Precision plate and a Holosun 509T. The Athena plate allows the 509T to sit directly on the slide and it cross bolt mounts like a dovetail. Its sits nice and low. Ameriglo GL-329 sights co-witness exact. Nothing short and nothing too high. Attached File Attached File Attached File |
