HK USP .45 Tatical needs two things... (Page 1 of 2)

Over the weekend i picked up 3 HK USPs. The one i was the most excited about was the USP .45 Tatical. I totally did the "my precious" bit when i saw it. ![]() Now i need two things for it. Holster (owb). And a suppressor. Thoughts? The other two USP 9 USP 9 Expert For the 9, i already have a pending F4 for a obsidian 9, I'll just need a threaded barrel and the correct piston. |
|
In my defense, $730 for the .45 tactical in excellent condition!!! I had to wait until Sunday to go back for the other two, wife was there with me, but I wasn't about to pass on that 45 Tactical!! ![]() I was just planning to get the 9mm at $550 (in excellent condition). But before I headed over, I watched a 1911 syndicate video with James Reeves talking about the different models. Then I'm like shit, can I pass on the Expert?! The answer was no; I could not pass on the expert. They were asking 1k for the expert, but I wrangled a package deal for the two. Got it for like 8fiddy. The expert has the jet funnel with two mags. The other two came with 2 mags as well, and in all 3 guns only 1 mag was ever used. These were range guns, never shot reloads and they keep their shit oiled and the barrels clean. They cleaned nothing else! my hands were black by the time I was done cleaning them up. ![]() That expert being the worst, it's also the only one showing a hint of wear on the grip. They also have a compact, and a P2000. but i stood strong and said "no!" 3 is enough.
|
|
Neat, i never knew the 23 had a right handed thread pitch. I'm glad to see the left handed thread pitch is pretty easy to source. That Mojave has a good look, plus made here in UT. I had to go into my local store to see what's going on with my paper work for the 9 supressor, and they had one on their shelf. Looks pretty good. I decided to be their guinea pig, and i did two suppressors to make it extra complicated for them. I saw they finally submitted the F4 for the .22 suppressor, but not the 9mm can. ![]() I told the counter guy about this thing called "traumatic intelligence". He's going to be a pro at this once I'm done with them! |
|
Capacity; Yeah, I didn't even see the jet funnel being an option while skimming. Triggers, I also see both the tactical and the expert have the match triggers "S" on the hammer, and the trigger is crisp unlike the USP9 and my older USP40. I see a grey guns short reset that I might try out. the reset is pretty long as is. USP9 needs the match trigger, USP40 probably won't get shot much... but it's nice to have 4 USP's for some reason. ![]() Suppressor: I saw a vid on the Mojave 45 vs the Obsidian 45, that Mojave seems to be pretty good. Compared to the Obsidian 9 I'm sort of wishing I got the Mojave 9 instead. |

Originally Posted By Gibbles:I see a grey guns short reset that I might try out. the reset is pretty long as is. USP9 needs the match trigger, ... Personally I think the match trigger is overrated. My Expert and Tactical came with one, but my Compacts do not have them(I don't think it fits the USPc anyway). It has the overtravel screw if that's important to you, but that's really the only benefit IMO. It's also a potential liability on a defensive handgun as the possibility exists for it to unscrew and prevent the trigger from going back far enough to fire the gun. What I found did make a huge improvement was the Gray Guns short reset and the nickel plated sear spring. Trigger rebound spring tuning (personal preference varies on crisp reset feel vs lighter trigger weight) and hammer spring tuning also help. I played around with various combinations and ended up with the silver match hammer spring in my Tac and Expert, with the slightly heavier standard blue spring in the Compacts for primer strike reliability. I use the #214164 trigger rebound spring because I like a crisp reset more than I like a light trigger weight. But there is a very light Match TRS available as well. I use the nickel plated sear springs in all my HK pistols. With the same springs and the GG SR installed, I don't notice a significant difference in trigger feel between the match trigger equipped guns and the non-match trigger guns. |

For the 9 - make sure you also get the correct recoil spring assembly for the SD/Tactical if you shoot it with a can. The springs aren’t different - the guide rod is. For the USP series of guns the recoil spring assembly is different between the non-threaded and threaded variants. It will work without the SD/Tactical-specific RSA but it will batter the frame a bit more - and constant use WILL trash the frame. I had to have my USP45 frame replaced due to that. The 45 Tac already comes with the correct RSA, and the RSA is backwards compatible; works just fine with the non-threaded barrel…if you shoot with a can on, you very much want the correct RSA in the gun. There’s plenty of Redditors with “Mine works fine, don’t believe it, the springs are fine” - again, it’s not the springs…it’s the rod itself that differs. |
"Oh, bother," said Pooh, as he pulled the pin on another grenade...

It interesting that HK actually made geometry changes that appear to increase dwell time before the slide unlocks. Most companies seem to just band aid it with a stiffer recoil spring and call it good. |
|
That's HK for you, over think the hell out of it. The action is one of those pleasurable things, super freaking clicky and consistent with it. At first i was "wtf". Then later I'm doing a "Mmm so sexy". Listening to Reves talk about the USP, it sounds like the main reason is due to how over built it is. Him noting that it's the basis for their pistols afterwards, them just removing the unneeded heft or whatever. As for the 9mm getting suppressed, that just adds more $$ to it. ![]() I also read that the 9mm tactical barrel oring is compatible with the non tactical slide? |
|
So for the 9mm threaded barrel. RCM or HK I don't see any 1/2x28 threaded barrels in stock right now, just the left handed ones. So it's a toss up, the price difference isn't huge. About the price of a sd recoil assembly. On the expert, if i decide to supress that... I see Jarvis has an option for it, and the optional fitted barrel where i need to send my barrel in. + Cost of the correct recoil guide rod. Makes me feel like i just need to find a 9mm tactical. ![]() Or i supress the expert, buy a bunch of jet funnel mags at either 70 ea for the plastic base, or 100 ea for the metal ones. Then jet funnel the 9mm and supress that bad boy. ![]() Now I'm talking crazy. It's not like i would ever buy 3 USPs in a single weekend or something. ![]() In seriousness, guys with the rcm barrels how do you like them? I have some experience with their mp5 parts. Top notch, but i haven't seen a barrel of theirs. |
|
If HK is an option, get the HK. All the RCM parts I've tried "work" but never as reliably as the HK factory parts (locking pieces, and barrels in my case). You're not going to save a whole lot of money if you buy an RCM barrel and find out it's unreliable...then need to sell it and buy another barrel and try again. In my case HK never made (that I know of; if they did, it wasn't sold in the US) a P2000 threaded barrel, my only option was an RCM - and it never really was reliable. All factory HK threads are in metric. So just get the appropriate piston for you can, and you'll be fine. |

I have several of RCM's USP barrels- great quality, and the outer finish is more durable than my HK-sourced threaded barrels. Buy with confidence. |
It takes away some of the visual impact when you can't see it.
Well optics planet had a price on that HK barrel that was so good it's suspicious. ![]() They also had a P226 chrome lined and threaded barrel that looked more like it's actually in stock. $200 for the HK barrel, and $179 Sig barrel. both are the same backwards metric thread, so two birds and stuff. ![]() So, I'm rolling the dice there. SD recoil assy on order from robertrtg (hkpartspro) since it was about $20 cheaper than hkparts.net. The tactical barrels are close to the same price, so when optics planet fails me i have a backup. |

RobertRTG and Blue Ridge Supply/HKPartsPro are two different companies ![]() And basically yeah - unless hkparts.net is the sole source of the parts, you’re generally better off getting parts from MidwestGunWorks, MidwayUSA, or some of the other HK specialist e-stores. Or even the HK USA web shop. Believe it or not some of the time they’re less expensive. |

It's also on the header. ![]() I wish this site would let me attach pictures directly. Probably a subscribed/paid thing I'm guessing. Memories of photobucket before the $$ grab, rip photobucket. Attached File Memes are new though! And i spent some time searching for the barrel, Blueridge and HKParts have it. nowhere else. the $199 price also seems to be an old thing, where everyone with it listed show out of stock. So, I'm expecting that barrel order to get cancelled on me. |

I love the SilencerCo Osprey for a .45 suppressor. It looks so good on the HKs. I use it more on a MK23 but it sill looks perfect on the USP 45 Tac. The AAC Ti-Rant 45m I'm not overly impressed with but it is head and shoulders above the B&T Impuls. For your 9mm, if you decide to suppress it, my favorite 9mm suppressor right now is the Surefire Ryder 9. |
|
I have the Osprey 9 in jail right now. The .45 will come next. I like how the Osprey comes apart for easy cleaning. The Mojave looks better in reviews but it doesn't come apart. Osprey is cheaper for everything including the adapters. The Osprey 9s main use will be on a MP5 via the tri-lug mount. Beyond that, i also have a fn 509 tatical and a couple of beretta 92s with threaded barrels. Newest one is a 92x performance optic. So 9mm on the top of the list, 45 is next. Then 308 and 556. If i had bought the 45 tactical first, the .45 can would have been the priority. Usp 45 tactical has been one of my grail guns I do plan on suppressing the USP9.

It also needs extended mag baseplates, and a light. I'm even thinking about milling mine ![]() Attached File |

They lose the HK mild coloring that has so much class. ![]() but then you have an optic...

I put Osprey 9 above, i was looking at it for the .45 and it scrambled my brain ![]() Obsidian 9 is what i have. And i ran it for the first time last weekend on my 509 tac in full config. I don't know if it was the weight on the end of the barrel or the lack of a bang. I 100% shoot better suppressed. Not as much gas to the face as i expected, but once it blew the excess oil out, it wasn't bad at all. Optic plantet pushed the expected ship date back more for the usp 9 barrel, so i canceled. I have another on order from hkp that should arrive before this weekend. Hkp being local = i get next day shipping with usps basic. Optic plant came through with the sig p226 barrel. So that's ready to rock with the left handed thread. I also have a set of sights for the usp9 on order from Amazon. I went with the meprolight true dots that appear to be a near clone of the ones on the tac and expert hk sights. Just with tritium. The Mojave cleared jail, but I'm waiting on the 16x1lh piston and the fixed barrel spacer from deadair before i can go have fun with it. I think deadair might be having some mail issues, I'm not getting shit from them. Not even password reset emails. ![]() So who knows what's happening with my order. I found the fixed barrel spacer from my Obsidian does seem to work. It could be a little shorter but it's perfect otherwise. So i might be gtg to run it on my vector this weekend if all else fails. |

I’ll make do with this 9mm for the moment. Nice!! I have my usp 9 full "tactical". Meprolight "supressor height", threaded barrel, and the sd recoil spring assembly. I shot it for the first time suppressed last weekend. Super smooth shooting. I'm still waiting on dead air to freaking ship my piston though.... !@%$ I'm about to tell them to cancel the order, I'll get it from somewhere else. So the usp 9 "tactical" conversion is filling the void for now. |
|
For the dea air Mojave 16x1lh piston... I ordered on the 14th along with a fixed barrel spacer. Well i called dead air as they responded once to an email, then nothing afterwards. ![]() Thursday they said they aren't sure why it didn't ship, they were calling down to the warehouse and would call me right back. The day goes by, nothing. So i called again on friday, this time they put me on hold and called down to the warehouse. They said the issue was the fixed barrel spacer wasn't in stock, so that's holding up the entire order. They said they talked to Mike the warehouse manager and he was able to locate one, and the order was headed out that day. I'm hoping Mike is Pappas... lol Dealing with him in the past, he will take it out of his personal stash to make it happen. But it seems like a jump from founder to warehouse manager... ![]() Anyways, i never got a shipment notice for anything. I'm still thinking there is something wrong with their mail system. I do that shit for work, so I have some theories... Big one; i can't even reset my dead air password. No mails, not even in junk. I'm so tempted to order a second piston from somewhere else. But damnit, i don't need two of them! |

There are still 10 40's at RCM in that weird Teutonic 14.5x1 LH (9/16x24 is out, and has been.. for a while). Silencerco has a piston in this pitch, but no one else that I know of. If you can go boosterless, Downrange Products has a nice to-9/16 adapter. |
It takes away some of the visual impact when you can't see it.

I'll note that with the left-hand thread on the 9mm, it tightened when I shot it. I had to remove the piston cap from the suppressor so I could get a set of pliers on the piston. Afterwards I made sure the suppressor was tight before I shot it, seemed to make a difference. With 1/2x28, I had to keep tightening it. |

The silencerco osprey 45 was the biggest disappointment in my life. I have a hybrid 46 and really like it. Works great on everything I used it on (rifle and pistol), it was just a little heavy for pistols for my liking. On paper, the osprey was supposed to have the same suppression (db rating) as the hybrid 46, but weigh way less. It also is not supposed to block your sights. Sounds like the perfect can, so I bought one (back when the $200 tax was still a thing). That thing, you might as well not even have it on there it is so loud. First shot sounds completely unsuppressed. All the rest of the shots ring your ears to the point you still have to wear hearing protection. I stopped, put the hybrid 46 on it, and suppression was great, no earpro needed. Same gun, same ammo. Put the osprey back on, and it is back to ringing my ears. Oh, and the POS still blocks my sights. The only saving grace is it works pretty decently on subsonic 9mm. I still hate the thing and grumble every time I see it in the safe. I have been wanting another dedicated 45 can and I have been eyeballing the Mojave. I am just a little "gun shy" now. I have not bought another suppressor after that osprey as I am afraid of repeat disappointment. I am wanting a dedicated 45 and a dedicated 223 (prefer low backpressure), I just can not make a choice. Let me know how you like that mojave. I love my dead air mask, so I am curious how their centerfire cans are. My Mk23 (and 1911) beg for a good can. |
|
Interesting. The Osprey v2 is one of my favorite pistol suppressors. Use it on one of my MK23s and it's a dream to shoot. It doesn't block my sights either. Other 45 suppressors I own; Octane 45 TiRant 45M Obsidian 45 Impuls II-A 45 - My LEAST favorite I've used all of those on my MK23s and a USP 45. Of them all, the Osprey performs the best. |
|
I saw Scheels has the Osprey a couple of weeks ago. I love the look. The Mojave has fantastic reviews on youtube. Sold me as the "quietest .45 can". So far i have only fired it on the .45 Kriss Vector using a fixed spacer from my 9mm rugged Obsidian. While it's a tad longer than the Mojave proper spacer, it worked good enough to put 30rds through it. The Obsidian 9 wasn't bad out of my USP 9, Sig p226, and my favorite suppressed so far (due to a trijicon rmr), FN509. The MP5's are their own thing, it's really what i bought the Obsidian for. One day they will get their own fatter cans. With the 9 can, I'm probably deaf enough already that it was only slightly "loud" for the first pop or two, afterwards it was fine. No ringing afterwards (that wasn't already there). ![]() The Mojave on the vector was much louder. Surprised me how much louder it was. I don't have a reference for other .45 cans but i was expecting it to be closer to my 9mm cans experience. DAs instructions do say the can needs to be broken in, once the baffles get coated with carbon it should quiet down. In another two weeks or so, I'll run some more .45 through it. I also couldn't get the vectors rattler r to rattle with it attached. And both cans have only been run in the long config so far. |
