Acquired this one a short while ago. I like the fact it's a 6-shot. I assume +P are ok in moderation? Are these worth much? I'm thinking fair market is what... $450-$550? If I keep it I'd like different grips.

That's a nice looking revolver, mine is a later 3rd generation which came with rubber grips. Occasional use of +P is good as long as it's not a steady diet. iirc I paid close $400- $450 almost 20 years ago.

The post-1973 Detective Special with the shrouded barrel was factory rated for up to 3,000 rounds of +P ammo. After that they needed to be returned to Colt for inspection and possible frame replacement. The aluminum Cobra and Agent were rated for up to 1,000 rounds of +P. As a discontinued model, I'd recommend shooting standard .38 Special for practice and load the +P for carry use. The only problem with shooting +P is that the gun will wear faster and need maintenance sooner. Today there are a number of non+P standard .38 defense loads that are excellent. |

Picked up this parkerized Colt Agent for $500 off EE a month ago. I added the wood grips. Was also curious about +P. Ended up getting some Defensive Non +P Buffalo Bore .38 ammo. Attached File |

Ugly duckling project I just acquired from Centerfire Systems. I spent 2 full evenings working on the action and try to find the right combination of parts to get it work work. Replaced the side plate, trigger, trigger pin, hammer, rebound lever and mainspring. Action is fairly smooth now but a little heavy, but I think it will at least fire. Waiting for a set of grips from ebay. I guess I was "lucky" to get this one for less than 250. Everything they have left looks even worse than this one and is near 400 dollars. Oh well, I like a challenge. Might even try my hand at nickle plating in the future. Attached File Attached File |

I haven't bought much of anything for years, one here one there but that's it. Sold more then I bought. Couple hundred bucks to mid threes got you pretty much everything but the true collectable revolvers like 27's, Pythons, and the like. I'll look nowadays but usually have to check my pulse rate and blood pressure when I see the price. Of course the dollar isn't worth shit nowadays and that is a lot of it. |

| In snubs plus p offers at best negligible increased performance from a defensive point of view, simply not worth the trouble and it is HIGHLY doubtful you would ever shoot enough of them to cause issues. Lots of very competent revolver guy’s recommend lowly 148 target wad cutters as the round of choice in snubs for defense, and you can shoot them a lot ( low cost and easy in the recoil department and shoot at or near point of aim in most snubs) to gain proficiency in what is widely recognized as one of the most difficult handguns to shoot accurately |
