I'm a Walther guy but I do make exceptions. I receive a Colt 357 Trooper MK V 4" blued yesterday. From my research early production model serial number 010xxV. Does not have original grips. Those may be found later from the estate. There is supposed to be a shoe box with some ammo and a pair of wooden grips in it. Pictures will follow. Attached File Attached File |

@funnelcake went back over to the estate and found the wooden grips. The grips are in fair to good shape. I have high standards. The screw was nowhere to be found. But it gets better. In the same box with the grips was a Colt MK V 8" barrel. Attached File Attached File |

The extra barrel raises uncomfortable questions: Was the 8 inch barrel the original, and if it was, who did the change and did they do it correctly. I've seen way too many revolver barrels changed by amatures who had not idea how to do a change correctly and didn't have the correct tools to do it. Those are the guys who stick a hammer handle through the frame window and twist the frame off. They also have no clue about forcing cone adjusting. |

That never crossed my mind. Reason being the old mirror like blueing looks too perfect. Yes it does have a little patina (It was used and I'm sure enjoyed). And I knew the person that owned it. He was a hunter. The 8" barrel is too perfect to have ever been mounted on the lower or frame. My thinking he was going to have the 8" barrel installed. Sometime down the road I'm going to do the paper work and pay for a letter from Colt to get what configuration it was when it left the factory. This will tell me what size barrel it had, the date shipped and where and who it was shipped to. |

MkIII’s do have the partial underlug, just not the vent rib, it’s a solid rib. 80’s-90’s were an interesting time for Colt with the strike guns, Double Eagles, All American, etc. ETA: My bad on first post. There was another vent rib/partial underlug from the same family - the one year only Officers Match MkIII from 1969. Odd I’d forget that as I almost bought one during my Colt revolver collecting days. They’re valued a lot higher now. ETA2: Yah, the MkV grips were interesting in their own right. IMO neither variant was particularly attractive & they enclosed the backstrap making the DA pull on these a pretty dang long reach; and I’ve got big mitts. |
