I have a .22 suppressor in the works and nothing I have is threaded. What a terrible reason for a new gun, right?!

I am looking at either a 22/45 MkIV or a Browning Buckmark. I already have a 22/45 MKIII, so I am familiar with them and the backward mag compatibility would be nice, but not a huge deal either way since I'd only buy a handful of extra mags. It is mostly for plinking and casual target shooting.

What say you guys?

The one with better trigger.  I love me some Rugers, but my one Mk IV has a shit trigger.  My Buckmark is excellent.

lol, just like me.  I bought the griffin checkmate and had to buy a new gun.  I went with the mk4.  Of course none of my mk2 mags work, but I found 4 packs of mk 4 mags for a hundred bucks.  Had to have a dot. More $.
Stupid 360.00 can ended up costing me 1200 I think.  Still lovin it.  Trigger could be better, but I’m sending 12 ga hulls into orbit from 30’.
I got the lite mainly cause it’s for grouse during archery season.  It rides in a chest bag, takes very little to attach the can.
Tired of busting arrows on grouse.
What can did you get?

Buckmarks (except Camper) are nicer out of the box, but you have the Volquartsen parts catalog to entertain you with Ruger.

Ruger's changed mags so many times I don't know if your mags would fit the Mk 4 or not.  I stock the Buckmarks for that reason, but can't get a threaded model on the table for under $500.

Just took in a Mk3 Lite threaded for cheap, so kept that one & sold the HB Mk 2 22/45 sample gave me many years ago.

If it's just the trigger, VQ and TandemKross trigger and internals will give a Ruger a *much* better trigger.

There's a lot going for the buckmark, but it just didn't fit my hand personally.  I went with a 22/45 tactical, and did trigger/hammer/sear/mag-safety-delete with parts from VQ and TK.  It's *amazing*.

If your plan is to buy it and shoot it and keep it stock then Buckmark. Out of the box I think they are better guns.

If you’re open to modifying it then Ruger. The aftermarket loves Ruger, lots more parts available.

For years I collected and shot Buckmark pistols but since I wasn’t into suppressors none of my guns had threaded barrels.
They all had nice crisp factory triggers and were reasonably accurate.

When I got into suppressors I looked into getting the barrels threaded or maybe even threaded barrels, both options were more trouble then they were worth.

Sold all my guns and bought a Ruger. It was nice but the trigger was lacking. The aftermarket didn’t let me down.
The end result is now one of my favorite rimfire pistols.

I have an Otter Creek Labs Titanium 22 in jail.

I have been looking at aftermarket parts for both guns and am seeing more limited options for Buckmarks, but the report that the triggers are much better out of the box so changing it isn't necessary.

I think I'll see what I can find locally to compare hand fit. I love how the 22/45 fits me, but I have never held a Buckmark. The trigger on my 22/45 is great, but it has eaten tens of thousands of rounds in all the years I have owned it, so maybe it was terrible at first and I don't remember.

Why don't you just thread your gun? While I think the mag body is the same between the III and IV 22/45 the base pads are not so you'd have to swap those out going between guns.

I have both. My Buckmark has a much better trigger. My 22/45 suppressed will eat any ammo I run through it without a hiccup.

I love my Buckmark trigger but I think the suppressed Rugers are quieter.   The Buckmark being open on both sides seems louder.

If you don't like the trigger, put in a VQ trigger.

My 84/85 Buckmark, with the OCL Titanium on it.   Stupid quiet, better with subs, still going strong after 40 years.   I did have to change out the internal spring and barrel though a few years back.    Still have the slab side barrel, using the Tac Sol threaded 4"barrel.

 Shoots great.

My MK4 trigger could be better, but like I said I can shoot tiny things at 30’.  They all get better with use too.
I do like the familiar feel of a 1911 for sure.  Never owned a Browning so no input there.  I may ditch the Ruger sight/rail thing on my lite and just get a dot mount before I mess with the trigger.  Less weight and back up sights are highly unlikely to ever be used.

That’s the Ruger factory rail that came on the lite.  Don’t know about compatibility with other rugers, but the 507x bolted right on.

Just to put out another great choice, S&W victory- when I went looking for a host a few years ago ( not long after the victory threaded was introduced) my choices were similar browning ruger or S&W.

I took the chance on the S&W
Perfectly adequate out of the box no aftermarket stuff needed
( I see a lot of rugers at steel challenge matches, and stock guns are iffy reliability wise, and people dump large sums of money into aftermarket reliability efforts )
At the time ( not sure currently) the threaded victory was found $200 less than the cheapest threaded ruger I could find, and $100 less than the threaded browning.

Near bullseye competition accuracy, good sights ,included red dot rail, magazines easily found for $25 each.

Mine has been one of the most reliable 22’s I have ever owned with everything from European match ammo to mini mags both with and without can.

Easy takedown for cleaning. Runs a long time (1000-1500 between field stripping ) between cleanings

Thanks everyone! I had checked a few local shops, and not one had a threaded anything aside from 22/45 Lites and TX22s. I kept checking and it came down to pure chance, but I picked up a 22/45 MKIV for $339 at a local shop. They did have one threaded Buckmark for $729. I can buy some Volquartsen parts for that price!

I went straight from there to pick up my suppressor. The shop hadn't even realized it was approved, but they got me squared away with it and I stepped into the indoor range. It was a hot and muggy day, so I was alone on the line. I loaded up the three mags with Minis and shot it unsuppressed to make sure it functioned correctly. It did, so I loaded up the mags, unscrewed the muzzle cap and threaded on the can. Ran the target to 10yds and pulled the trigger. Pop! Boy, did I have a big grin! I fired all 30 rounds and didn't stop grinning. Next, I loaded up 10rds of CCI Suppressor. Pew! Well, that was nice and quiet compared to the Minis (duh). Then, I loaded up a magazine of CCI Quiet. Talk about movie quiet! But it didn't have the power to cycle the bolt, so I had to manually feed each round. No problem! It was entertaining, but I won't use it again unless I need extreme silence for some reason. I ended up firing just over 200 rounds and had to leave everything cool for ten minutes just to unscrew the suppressor.

Overall, I'm quite happy with my choice. The price was more than right, the trigger was perfectly acceptable, it had only one malfunction with the Suppressor ammunition (I don't count the Quiet feeding since it just doesn't pack the power), and it stayed inside a 3" circle at ten yards with ease.

Congrats. As someone with a few Ruger's and 1 Buckmark, I would have recommended the MKIV so I think you did well.

Seriously consider getting the VQ trigger because it will bring that gun to a whole new level.

Enjoy it. Suppressed rimfires are a blast!

So I should update, my son was over last week shooting the Buckmark and the firing pin broke in half.  That said it's a 40 year old gun, and pretty good run.     I have yet to take it apart, I know the firing spring is toast as well.  Just need to find the right parts to replace.

Edited, nice pick up on the Ruger, decent price for sure.     Where I am now I am stuck with a Buckmark, not many places shipping threaded barrels to commie Wa.     So either I fix this one, (sentimental value) at this point or find a BM on the cheap.    May just go that route, not sure yet.

But good choice OP!

One other thing to consider:
Browning offers two different frames for the Buckmark, standard and URX, IIRC.

There are actually 3 different Buckmark frames... the Standard/Original UFX frame as well as the UDX and URX frames but keep in mind, grip options for the last 2 are limited. Out of the 3, I actually find the URX frame with the standard plastic grips fit me the best but then you are trading a plastic frame (22/45) for plastic grips (URX). Lok (and maybe others?) do make grips for the URX frame but they change the feel of the gun (shortened grip front/back).

I do like that the Buckmark frames are aluminum but the 22/45 frame fits and points better for me than any of the Buckmark frames do and the 22/45 frame has a ton of grip options.

The MK IV Ruger is better overall. Price wise, mag availability, takedown and a lot more threaded models. But, the Buckmark is still an excellent pistol.

No experience with the Buckmark, but the Gen 4 22/45 takedown system for cleaning is awesome. Pivots forward and bolt comes out like an AR15.

Given how dirty .22lr is, and the importance of keeping .22's clean for reliability, I think that's a big bonus.

Unless heavily modified and dedicated to that specific round, no semi I know of will run the regular CCI quiets. CCI does make another version called quiet semi auto with a little more power that does work ( usually) in unmodified guns.

For general can use, low cost and available everywhere nothing beats CCI standard velocity.

I will be that guy- if your gun works perfect as is don’t start dropping aftermarket stuff into it- while there is the possibility it could enhance some aspects of performance, there is also a near equal chance it will degrade reliability- I see this all the time with shooters taking a gun that works and tweaking it until it doesn’t

I have been! I hadn't told my old man that I got a suppressor. I took him to the range, and he fired a round then stopped and looked around for the shell casing. He turned to me and goes "did it to go off?" I laughed and said yes. He asked if I got a silencer and I said yes. He fired the rest of the magazine and turned around. "This is so cool!"

I couldn't agree more. I did have two malfunctions, but I was firing some dirtier ammunition. I'm going to tear the pistol and suppressor down to clean them.
