The churning energy of the water at the base of the waterfall along with entrained silt, sand, gravel, and rock undermines and weakens the vertical joints in the columnar basalt which fails from the bottom up as a result of the effects of gravity and entropy. Freeze/thaw of ice expands and weakens the joints in the columnar basalt on a seasonal/annual basis. Science, yo! 🤓 Or, Icelandic water nymphs/faeries did it. 🤔 I like saying "columnar basalt".  As with pretty much every question regarding the Earth and natural history, the most simplistic yet all-encompassing answer is: "plate tectonics". |
